Summary of Position
The Criminal Justice Department is seeking an Instructor to deliver assigned curriculum using required texts and materials, starting and ending classes on time, and providing students with a detailed syllabus that outlines course objectives, assignments, grading policies, and contact information. They are expected to utilize the College's learning management system (D2L) to support instruction, record attendance, and maintain accurate, up-to-date grades.
Instructors should prepare thoroughly for each class, using diverse teaching strategies to meet the needs of a varied community college student population and ensuring that course content and assessments align with learning objectives. Consistent, timely feedback on student performance is required, along with submission of all final grades in Banner by the designated deadline.
Effective communication is essential. Instructors must respond to student and staff inquiries within 24-48 hours, attend department meetings, and provide regular updates to the department chair. With experience, instructors may also take on collaborative departmental responsibilities.
This position reports to the Department Chair, Jerry Sanchez. The work schedule for this position varies, at the Lakewood location or online. May require hours outside of normal work schedule.
This position may work up to 28 hours per week, depending on budget and need.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge and/or experience with curriculum and teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse populations.
- Knowledge and/or experience with the use of instructional technology including classroom application distance learning.
- Evidence of incorporating technology into classroom instruction.
- Experience/familiarity with assessment of student learning, instructional effectiveness and/or adult learning.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
- Problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
- Displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment toward completing assignments in a timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products, D2L, and other computer software as necessary.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum Required: Master's degree in one of several related degrees listed below. Also allowed, a Master's degree in any field, plus 18 graduate credits in one of the related degrees listed below.
- Related degree: Criminal Justice, Criminology, Forensic Anthropology, Forensic Psychology, Juris Doctorate, Political Science, Sociology, Social Science, Public Administration, Public Affairs.
Physical & Cognitive Demands
The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.
- Occasionally moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 10 lbs.
- This is largely a sedentary role. This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
- The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.
Advertised Hourly Pay
Payment is based on the credit hour/contact hour and class ratio as assigned to you by the department chair, commensurate with education and experience. This is a part-time, FLSA exempt position and may work up to 28 hours per week, depending on budget and need.
This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.
