Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Curator, Exhibition and Collections - Fine & Performing Arts at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

  • Develop and support the mission of the University’s Elaine L. Jacob and Art Department Galleries. Assist with database management, record keeping, cataloging, preservation, storage, collection processing, and exhibit coordination for Wayne State University‘s Elaine L. Jacob and Art Galleries.
  • Oversee the installation and de-installation of exhibitions, ensuring proper handling, security, and preservation of objects.
  • Collaborate with the Gallery and Collection curatorial team to conceptualize, design, and plan engaging exhibitions that align with the museum’s mission, objectives, and interpretive plan.
  • Develop innovative exhibition layouts and floorplans that maximize the use of space while ensuring a coherent and intuitive visitor flow and impactful visitor journey.
  • Develop ways in which objects archived, and artworks can be interpreted through exhibits, publication, events, and audio-visual presentation.
  • Design graphics, labels, signage, and interpretive materials that align with the exhibition’s overall design aesthetic.
  • Designs and coordinates the production of all digital and printed publicity items, including but not limited to postcards, booklets, banners, print, vinyl signage, and digital advertisements.
  • Coordinate logistics, including transportation, insurance, installation, lighting, and technical requirements for exhibits.
  • Collaborates with Sr. Curator- on the development of the exhibit design to create visually captivating, innovative, and immersive exhibition layouts that enhance the guest experience.
  • Hire, schedule, train/educate students through professional gallery and museum practices.
  • Creates press material for online and social media platforms, including website management, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
  • Documents all exhibitions, oversee receptions, and other related programming via photography and video and provides copies to artists.
  • Collaborate with the faculty team to plan exhibitions that align with academic programs.
  • Develop related educational programming surrounding the collection and exhibitions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master‘s degree in fine art, art history, museum studies, or a related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • 3+ years’ experience in an arts, culture, or non-profit sector fine art gallery management, preferred.
  • Technical Knowledge: Possess Knowledge and experience in art history, cataloguing procedures, and database management techniques. Proven experience in gallery management or a related role within the art industry.
  • Oral & Written Communication Skills: Must possess effective, professional written and verbal skills, and can effectively communicate information to individuals from diverse backgrounds. Able to work collaboratively with artists, staff, and patrons.
  • Planning/Organizing Skills: Ability to prioritize and plan work activities and adapt to changing conditions.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products and Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop). Digital photography and web management design experience
