Dean of Students
Position Summary
Rutgers University-Camden is seeking a Dean of Students. The Dean of Students at Rutgers University–Camden is a key leadership role within the Division of Student Affairs, reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. This position works closely with the dean's offices of each of the schools on the Camden Campus and serves as a central figure in fostering student success and well-being. The university welcomes applicants with a strong record of success in student affairs or higher education leadership, particularly in roles involving student support and advocacy.
The Dean of Students is responsible for addressing student concerns, conduct, support, and crisis response. This role oversees the Dean of Students team, which includes:
- CARES/Advocacy – Supporting students experiencing personal, academic, or financial difficulties.
- Community Standards/Conduct – Educating students on their responsibilities and adjudicating violations of the student code of conduct and academic integrity.
- Office of Disability Services – Providing leadership and strategic oversight to ensure equitable access and support for students with disabilities, in compliance with university policies and federal regulations. The Dean will work to integrate disability services into broader student support strategies and foster a campus culture of inclusion and accessibility.
The Dean acts as a liaison to faculty and staff who identify students in distress and serves as a referral point to campus and university services. They chair the Students of Concern Committee and lead the Crisis Response Threat Assessment Team during campus emergencies. As part of the student affairs leadership team, the Dean will also lead strategic initiatives aimed at improving the student experience.
The Dean of Students serves as the Dean on Duty, responding to student emergencies 24/7 and coordinating a multidisciplinary response team including RUPD, Student Wellness, Residence Life, faculty, and staff.
Given the broad scope of student engagement, the Dean of Students is uniquely positioned to identify and address systemic barriers to student success. This role involves:
- Collaborating with students, faculty, staff, and administrators to resolve concerns and guide students toward solutions.
- Interpreting and explaining university policies and procedures.
- Leading efforts to improve institutional practices that impact student progress and retention.
- Serving as the final decision authority on the Student Code of Conduct.
Minimum Education and Experience
A masters' degree Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a closely related field is required, plus a minimum of 5-7 years of increasing responsibility in a leadership role in Higher Education, with a strong preference for Student Affairs experience or other relevant area.
Specialized knowledge of Higher Education policies, processes, organizations, of Student Affairs theories and practices, and of Student Development theories and practices.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
This position will requires late night (after 10pm) work on occasion to deal with student crises. It will also require on-call scheduling. The incumbent will be required to think clearly, listen closely and act quickly at all times of day and night.
Salary
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, within university policy and salary schedules, as well as departmental budgets.
