Departmental (Sherrington) Project Delivery Manager

About us:

The Medical Sciences Divisional Office team is a collaborative group of individuals, working across a diverse portfolio of activities. We value creative problem solvers and confident decision makers with a resilient streak. Our team is friendly, welcoming and supportive, and is a great environment to hone leadership and management skills while contributing to the impact of Oxford’s medical sciences research.

At the Department of Physiology Anatomy & Genetics (DPAG) we undertake discovery science where we reassemble physiological processes at the molecular, cellular, tissue and systems level of organisation. In so doing we provide a bridge to translational medicine, and interface between physical and life sciences. We are committed not only to innovative research and the highest standard of teaching, but also to creating an inclusive and supportive working environment.

Overview of the role:

The Medical Sciences Division is seeking to appoint a Departmental Project Delivery Manager to support DPAG while we undertake an extensive refurbishment of the Sherrington Building. The building was constructed 75 years ago and whilst there have been targeted areas of refurbishment it is now in need of extensive works to fully update the building and its services. The department will remain in occupation throughout the works and will continue to run its teaching and research activities.

You will connect the department and the capital project team to ensure that activities are well planned, coordinated and communicated, so that all parties are clear on arrangements and that required actions are undertaken. This will include communications, planning and implementing internal relocations, minimising disruption to normal activities, procuring soft services, furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E), change management, through to producing documentation.

You will work closely with senior staff from DPAG, Medical Sciences Division, Estates, the design team, construction professionals, and other University stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of the Sherrington Refurbishment Project.

The ideal candidate will have strong intellectual and analytical skills, together with excellent communication skills (both orally and in writing). The capacity to deal effectively with a range of complex issues in a University environment will be essential. Numeracy, strong project management skills, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to gain the trust and confidence of people at all levels, both within and outside Oxford, are also essential. Previous experience of supporting projects requiring change management and construction activities in live buildings are highly desirable.

Due to the nature of this post, the successful candidate will be required to undertake a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and an Enhanced Level Security Screening.

Selection criteria:

  • Degree or equivalent vocational qualification in a scientific or technical subject or equivalent work experience.
  • Proven project delivery skills including organisation, planning and prioritisation.
  • Experience in the operational running of busy buildings and laboratories and a good understanding of building services.
  • Able to negotiate and problem-solve in a diplomatic and consensual manner.
  • Ability to organise work time efficiently and handle competing priorities to deliver results to a required high standard and to deadlines.
  • Procurement experience including the tendering of maintenance contracts and services and strong negotiating skills.
  • Strong management, interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels and to bring difficult matters to conclusion.
  • Strong IT skills with the ability to learn new software packages and working knowledge of MS office including Word and Excel.
  • Experience of change management and setting up new procedures and processes.
