Job Description
The Desktop Technician manages the day-to-day workstation and related operations for the research institute. This role is responsible for the full lifecycle of endpoint devices, from procurement and deployment to security patching and decommissioning. They will act as a technical consultant to research staff, ensuring their hardware and software configurations meet specific project requirements while maintaining alignment with institutional IT policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Endpoint Management: Deploy, configure, and maintain the laptop, desktop and mobile device fleet. This includes deployment, management, and maintenance of all university-owned endpoint devices.
- Technical Support: Provide high-level troubleshooting and direct user assistance for hardware and software issues in all Roanoke campus buildings.
- Consultation & Onboarding: Conduct technical onboarding for new hires and provide expert recommendations to researchers on workstation hardware/software specifications.
- Security & Compliance: Implement and test endpoint security protocols, recovery systems, and desktop compliance measures.
- Operational Documentation: Maintain precise records in the ITSM (Service Management) system and team knowledge base.
- Asset Management: Perform regular inventory audits and workstation assessments to ensure hardware health and accountability.
Proficiency in OS deployment, imaging, and enterprise patch management. Experience troubleshooting complex hardware and software workstation environments. Ability to analyze system requirements and provide technical specifications for diverse research needs. Strong documentation habits within an ITSM or Help Center framework.
Required qualifications:
Experience with Windows, OSX, Microsoft Office and other common applications, mobile device support, desktop and laptop hardware knowledge, local and network printing, and other peripheral support. Demonstrated working knowledge of network protocols and basic computer networking. Previous experience troubleshooting software and hardware system errors and endpoint installation and maintenance. Must have a strong work ethic, time management, and organization skills to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as in a team environment, and the ability adapt quickly to changing computing landscape. Ability to communicate and interact effectively.
Preferred qualifications:
Preference given for experience with advanced computer security, prior help desk or field service work, inventory management, Adobe products, system deployment tools, OSX, Linux and Windows system administration, and Windows Domain management. Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or similar field or equivalent experience and training.
