Digital Library Software Developer

The Opportunity:

Do you want a software development role working with Higher Education institutions and their partners across Scotland, supporting open access publishing initiatives through their open hosting platforms for journals and books?

We are looking for talented software developer to join our dynamic systems and development team within the Digital Library at the University of Edinburgh. Our team develops innovative software solutions, installs, integrates and supports third-party products, and actively participates in collaborative Open-Source projects.

This position will be the dedicated developer for the open journal systems and open monograph press instances we host at the University of Edinburgh for Edinburgh Diamond, and our shared service for the Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries (SCURL) and other external partners. This is an exciting role, working closely with colleagues across the sector who are passionate about open access.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week) open-ended contract; however, we are open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns. We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.

The salary for this post is £41,064 to £48,822 per annum (pro rata if part time).

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Relevant experience of developing web applications using a variety of programming languages such as Java, PHP and Python and familiarity with web development frameworks and APIs.
  • Experience of working with relational databases and in the Linux command line.
  • Experience with different metadata formats.
  • Experience of working with open publishing software like open journals systems (OJS).
  • Experience taking initiative and managing workload while working in a fast-paced software development team, in order to provide effective operational support.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a flexible approach to problem resolution and an ability to deal appropriately with changing requirements.
