Be a Tar Heel!: The Direct Support Professional for IDD position is located at the Carolina Living and Learning Center (CLLC), just north of Pittsboro and next door to Chatham Park, where a variety of new amenities are now available (e.g., Lowe’s Foods, People’s Coffee, Greek Kouzina, the Refuel station). We’re at the intersection of peaceful country living and busy modern life, where we can take advantage of both lifestyles. On our 79 acres, we serve 15 autistic adults with higher support needs. They live in two homes on our beautiful farm, where we also have a barn, a potting shed, and a greenhouse to provide plenty of year-round activities. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to serve this unique, vulnerable population, while collaborating with our dedicated and compassionate staff. Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit: Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of North Carolinians and others whom we serve. We accomplish this by providing leadership and excellence in the interrelated areas of patient care, education and research. Patient care: We promote health and provide superb clinical care while maintaining our strong tradition of reaching underserved populations and reducing health disparities across North Carolina and beyond. Education: We prepare tomorrow`s healthcare professionals and biomedical researchers from all backgrounds by facilitating learning within innovative and integrated curricula and team-oriented interprofessional education to ensure a highly skilled workforce. Research: We develop and support a rich array of outstanding health sciences research programs, centers and resources. We provide infrastructure and opportunities for collaboration among disciplines throughout and beyond our university to support outstanding research. We foster programs in the areas of basic, translational, mechanistic and population research.

Position Summary: This position is a part-time position with the TEACCH Autism Program, located at the Carolina Living and Learning Center (CLLC). Our Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) work directly with our autistic residents with higher support needs. DSPs are charged with assisting our residents to live as fully and as independently as possible. They are not merely caregivers; they provide whatever support is necessary for our residents to thrive. This position is a third shift position and will involve helping with the upkeep and maintaining a clean facility for our residents.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Since this position is a direct care staff member who works with autistic adults with higher support needs, individuals in this position must have the highest standards for ethical care of this vulnerable population, demonstrating integrity, reliability, and a deep commitment to maintaining the best possible quality of life for our residents. This position also requires the skill and desire to work well as part of a team, the demonstrated capacity to give and receive clear communication, and the emotional maturity to benefit from constructive feedback. We will provide the necessary training specific to our context so that the staff member becomes competent in person-centered care and the day-to-day implementation of the TEACCH model.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Professional and/or caregiving experience with autistic, disabled, and/or senior adults is preferred. The ideal candidate has experience with both autism and dementia.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements: This position requires the ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions and the ability to assist with the upkeep of the houses, gardens, and grounds, with or without accommodation. This position requires staff to be able to stoop, bend, walk distances on uneven ground, pushing, pulling, and moving items, with or without accommodation.
