Overview

The Department of Pathology at Yale School of Medicine seeks a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as the Director of Anatomic Pathology (AP) Labs. This pivotal role is responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of all clinical laboratory functions within the AP division. The Director of AP Labs will lead a team of senior laboratory managers and technical staff, ensuring excellence in clinical service delivery, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency.

This position plays a critical role in aligning laboratory operations with the department’s tripartite mission of clinical care, research, and education. The Director of AP Labs will serve as a key liaison between clinical leadership, faculty, and administrative stakeholders, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Provide strategic and operational oversight of all AP laboratory sections, including Histology, Cytology, Molecular, Immunohistochemistry, Autopsy, and Digital Pathology.
  • Ensure consistent standards, streamlined workflows, and high-quality service delivery across all units.
  • Collaborate with the CLIA Director, AP Director, and other stakeholders to maintain regulatory compliance and testing quality.

Human Resources Management

  • Oversee staffing, scheduling, and performance management for technical and clinical administrative personnel.
  • Partner with Yale Talent Acquisition and staff administration/HR to ensure staff qualifications, training, and professional development.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and growth-oriented work environment.

Financial and Strategic Planning

  • Support the Pathology Business Office with data analytics and documentation for budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Contribute to long-term strategic planning and operational sustainability initiatives.

Quality and Compliance

  • Lead quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives in collaboration with the QA/QI Director.
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable regulatory standards, including CLIA, CAP, NYS DOH, OSHA, and JCAHO.
  • Monitor service incidents and implement corrective actions to improve outcomes.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as a strategic partner across key service areas, including Specimen Accessioning, Case Management, Digital Solutions, and Reference Labs.
  • Promote transparent communication and alignment with Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) goals.

Organizational Structure

  • Director of AP Labs - Reports dually to the Senior Director of Finance and Administration and Clinical Vice Chairs.
  • Senior Managers - Oversee specialized lab sections and report to the Director of AP Labs.
  • Supervisors/Lead Technologists - Support daily operations in collaboration with senior managers.
  • Technical and Clinical Administrative Staff - Provides oversight and leadership of clinical services and support.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Five years of progressive leadership experience in a clinical diagnostic laboratory within an academic medical center.
  • ASCP certification as a laboratory professional.
  • Demonstrated expertise in laboratory operations, regulatory compliance, and quality management.
  • Proven leadership skills with experience in strategic planning, program development, and team management.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.
  2. Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University.
  3. Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University.
  4. Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University.
  5. Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  6. Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures.
  7. Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature.
  8. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives.
  9. Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems.
  10. Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area.
  11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature.
  12. Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies.
  13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees.
  14. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Seven years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
