Brief Description of Duties
This position reports to the Deputy Director of the University's Developing America's Workforce Nucleus (DAWN) initiative, directing the Community-to-Career Academy (the Academy). The DAWN is a project under part of UDC's Delivering on the Promise strategic plan. DAWN has a goal of increasing the diverse, domestic STEM Talent emanating from black, brown, and economically disadvantaged communities. The C2 Equity Academy is a pilot project that focuses on developing environmental sciences and public advocacy career pathways in the Anacostia High School feeder pattern. The dual role Ambassador position is responsible for developing and growing the Academy as a driving force in community efforts to enhance the educational and career opportunities for District students and residents more generally.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Implements strategic and operational workplans, including communications strategy, processes and procedures and manages the budget for the programs aligned with the Academy
- Assists the Deputy Director in developing the Academy program components and obtains the required collaboration with the UDC College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) and the academic units at UDC and the Urbans Water partners, and other District and federal partnering agencies.
- Leads and executes projects within the partnership such as identifying knowledge and skill gaps, hosting workshops accordingly, managing professional, student, and volunteer staff.
- Tracks and monitors projects advanced by partners.
- Works with the Deputy Director to develop of an annual workplan, connect District, federal, and private and UDC resources to the needs of the Anacostia community.
- Identifies existing District and federal tools and resources available for Anacostia projects.
- Identifies opportunities to improve the Academy by engaging with participating organizations and recruiting new partners, including serving on community organizing committees in Anacostia.
- Identifies funding opportunities, including identifying and assisting in preparation of grant applications.
- Reports on the progress, value, and outcomes of the Academy, including local success stories, barriers, and best practices. Reports may take various forms, including development of an annual workplan, annual progress reporting, web updates, participation on conference calls, newsletters, blogs, weekly reports to the UDC senior leadership, etc.
- Drives awareness locally, regionally, and nationally about the C2 Equity Academy to get students, faculty, staff, and community supporters engaged in an atmosphere of innovation, creativity, collaboration, and entrepreneurship.
- Establishes and maintains a network of federal and local agencies, nonprofits, and for-profit companies for internship and apprenticeship placements with a specific emphasis on equity and diversity.
- Convene on a monthly basis, and later a quarterly basis, federal and local partners to develop an annual workplan that identifies priority community projects that are then implemented and tracked.
- Participate in and/or lead meetings, including:
- Regular meetings with partners and community-based organizations (with a strong preference for locations within Anacostia), being proactive and inclusive to ensure all have a seat at the table; and
- Variety of University task forces and external committees for purposes of information development, sharing, reviewing, and executing objectives to assure alignment with the DAWN and Academy missions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
- A bachelor's degree related to one of the following: biological sciences, social sciences, community and urban planning, education, or commensurate experience that includes some management background.
- Experience in strategic planning and community development.
- Experience as a volunteer and/or engaged in community service.
