Director/Instructor, Electrical Systems Technology & Clean Energy
Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring a Director/Instructor for Electrical Systems Technology & Clean Energy in Electrical Systems Technology Program. The Director/Instructor, Electrical Systems Technology and Clean Energy is primarily responsible for the programs' management, operation, and supervision aligned with the BEST Department's strategic direction, and the college's strategic plan. This includes planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluation specific program components services, personnel, and related activities. The director/instructor will work closely with the dean on matters related to and for the benefit of these programs. The director/instructor must possess knowledge and understanding of relevant disciplines, including Electrical Systems technology and Clean (Renewable) Energy.
The responsibilities include but are not limited to planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of specific curriculum and continuing education program components, services, personnel, and related activities.
Leadership
- Provides oversight for the Electrical Systems Technology and Clean (Renewable) Energy Programs
- Supports employer engagement and community-based initiatives in all programs in Building, Engineering, and Skilled Trades
- Regularly examines program(s) and labor market data to achieve equitable outcomes in students Access, Completion, Graduation and Transfer/job placement.
- Regularly examines program enrollment and implements strategies to increase enrollments proportionally while growing FTE
- Identify, plan and schedule public classes to be held on the main campus and other Durham and Orange County campuses. Coordinate the class schedule with other site directors.
- Supports or coordinates professional development activities for program faculty and staff aligned with the strategic direction of the Dean Building, Engineering, and Skilled Trades.
- Explore funding opportunities and build capacity to expand programs for high demand high paying jobs in the region.
- Develops, coordinates, and supports new initiatives. In this case, Clean (Renewable) Energy initiative incorporating new Advisory Board for Clean (Renewable) Energy.
- Expand continuing education to curriculum options for equitable on-ramps to curriculum programs and off-ramps to living-wage work.
- Initiate advertising and other promotional strategies for marketing public course offering to the public and to business and industry.
- Supports active recruitment of students from underserved communities by engaging with K-12, community-based organizations, workforce development boards in Durham and Orange County etc.
- Work with business, industry, and government training staff(s) to develop courses when needed.
- Supports full integration of equipment and seamless pathways across Building, Engineering, and Skilled Trades program.
Management
- Supports creation and management of all aspects of the hiring process to fill needed positions-interview and hire qualified instructors that meet the credential requirements to teach the course subject matter and, when applicable, the licensing agency.
- Provide candidates with an effective orientation and in-service training.
- Prepare the program budget, monitor the status of expenditures, and maintain necessary records.
- Coordinates with all publishing representatives for affordable course material adoptions.
- Ensure proper registration, recordkeeping procedures, and issue course credentials, if applicable
- Supervise the development of training programs and materials by instructors
- Maintain outlines and all evaluations of courses
- Facilitate communications between the directors/department chairs, instructors, and staff at Durham Tech for course and program planning
Teaching and Learning
- Develop annual goals, objectives, and strategies for continuous improvement of the programs offered and maintain awareness of current continuing education and training trends;
- Monitor the results of course evaluations and provide appropriate feedback to instructors
- Acquire suitable facilities for classes and support instruction with needed resources
- Oversee continuous improvement in instruction, create new programming/services to support student achievement, and responsive to student and faculty concerns/issues
- Support distribution and review all course materials
- Monitor and coordinates the effective delivery of instruction within programs
- Support innovative scheduling to build early momentum towards completion and credential attainment for all students.
- Lead an active advisory board committee to inform curriculum and instructional technology, and increase WBL opportunities
- Maintain a teaching load as established by the college within the range of 9-12 contact hours per semester, given the position
- Maintain orderly and clean classroom and laboratory facilities, including storage rooms and assigned office.
- Working knowledge of the business and industry communities within Durham and Orange counties
- Personal qualities and work style to indicate capability with a team approach
- Perform all other standard administrative requirements expected of and assigned to management staff, including committee assignments within and without the division, community and professional involvement, and other activities or functions
- Perform other appropriate duties to adequately support Continuing Education and Curriculum areas as assigned by the dean, vice president/CAO, and the president
Other Duties
- Represent the programs, the department, the division or the college in institutional assignments, community affairs, recruiting events, professional activities, and uphold such involvement among program members
- Provide support and assistance to the Student Engagement, Development and Support Staff in conducting student recruitment and registration, determining admission requirements and procedures, orientation of new students, job placement of graduates, tracking of graduates, and other related activities; and,
- Assume other appropriate responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the assistant dean, dean, the vice president/CAO and the president.
- Develop, plan, and deliver curriculum on clean energy technologies (e.g., solar PV, wind, battery storage, EV charging infrastructure, energy auditing, etc.)
- Teach courses related to: Energy efficiency practices, Environmental regulations and policies Building charging stations and sustainable construction
- Provide hands-on training with tools, systems, and simulation software
- Ensure student safety during lab and field work
- Evaluate student performance through assignments, exams, and practical assessments
- Stay current with developments in clean energy technologies and industry standards
- Maintain industry certifications and encourage students to obtain theirs
- Collaborate with local clean energy businesses for internships and job placement opportunities
- Maintain training equipment and labs
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's degree (or higher) in Electrical Systems Technology, Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy or in a related field.
Work Experience:
At least two years of relevant work experience
Two years of teaching/training experience in industry, secondary, or post-secondary settings.
Three years of current continuing education or curriculum program supervision,
Three years of supervisor experience of full-time professional staff/faculty in a diverse and collegial environment is highly preferred.

- OSHA 10/30 Certification
- NC3 Fundamentals of Electricity: DC
- NC3 Fundamentals of Electricity: AC
- EVSE Technician Certification
