Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a distinguished, independent law school located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York. The Law School is searching for a Director of Externship Programs to join our team. The Law School’s size, vibrant employee and student population, and commitment to training the next generation of lawyers and promoting social justice, will offer a candidate the opportunity to develop and diversify practical skills and participate firsthand in operating a successful educational institution.

The Director of Externship Programs, a member of the clinical law faculty, is responsible for teaching and administering the BLS Externship Programs throughout the year—fall, spring, and summer terms. BLS Externship Programs are large and well-developed, with approximately 500 students each year earning academic credit by working in courts, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, private law firms, and in-house law departments. Director duties include course and program design, teaching and supervising faculty who teach in the classroom and other modes, placement approval, field supervisor training and engagement, student advising, and managing enrollment and assessment systems. The Director works extensively with the Office of Career and Professional Development and hundreds of field placements and supervisors to ensure the students’ work and experiences advance high academic and professional objectives and comply with ABA Standards. The Director will participate in local and national professional organizations dedicated to externship education.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage and assess field placements, identifying and cultivating potential new opportunities for students.
  • Liaise and communicate regularly and effectively with field supervisors and placements to ensure a strong educational experience for students.
  • Advise students on externship opportunities and manage applications and registration for Externship Courses each semester (fall, spring, and summer).
  • Develop appropriate curriculum for externship seminars and other modes of engaging students in on-going, continuous faculty-guided reflection during their externships.
  • Establish a schedule of externship seminars to be offered each term, and recruit, train, and supervise faculty who teach those seminars.
  • Teach one corequisite externship seminar each term.
  • Counsel students regarding any issues that arise in their fieldwork.
  • Oversee staff responsible for the administrative needs of the externship programs, including maintaining records through and otherwise optimizing use of the externships learning management system.
  • Conduct regular orientations for students in externships and considering externships.
  • Conduct periodic program reviews to improve learning outcomes and student experiences.
  • Liaise with other departments in the law school who contribute to the effectiveness of the externship programs, including the Office of Career and Professional Development, the Public Service law Center, the Registrar, and the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary or required.

Required:

  • JD Degree from an ABA-accredited law school and a license to practice law in any jurisdiction.
  • At least five years of prior related experience, which may include law practice, law teaching, career counseling, and or externship/internship development and outreach.
  • Preference for familiarity with NYC-area legal community, government agencies, courts, and public interest organizations, and/or teaching experience.
  • Experience building and/or defining a curriculum, and a desire to develop appropriate curricula for legal externs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication, group presentation, team management, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer skills including the utilization of various web-based databases, virtual meeting platforms, and standard office software programs.
  • Professionalism, sophistication, and diplomacy in working with and developing relationships with diverse constituencies of faculty, students, and practicing attorneys.
