Job Description:
The Director of Health Professions Advising leads the Health Professions Advising Office and assists with the advising of pre-health students. Some evening and weekend program presentation is required.
Job duties include but are not limited to the following:
Leads the Health Professions Advising Office and provides supervision for HPA staff and student workers in all efforts related to recruiting, advising, and retaining students.
Maintains a vision, goals, and metrics for measuring success of HPA and benchmarks the program, its practices, and its advisor training process with those at similar institutions.
Promotes student exploration of healthcare careers and assists students in understanding how to achieve educational and career goals related to health professions by providing students with opportunities to engage in clinical work, service, and research; encourages self-reflection on academic and extracurricular experiences; and assists students in identifying and discussing how those experiences have prepared them for a career of service in healthcare. Advising duties include meeting one-on-one, small and large group meetings, outreach, and follow-up, and application preparation, including personal statement review, mock interviews, and school selection.
Regularly attends and participates in regional and national professional development opportunities and keeps current on best practices for health professions advising, including attracting and supporting students from under-represented and marginalized populations, supervision and department management, maintaining advising records, and evaluating student success.
Builds effective relationships and coalitions between and among multiple stakeholders, including faculty and staff, administrators, students, alumni, and community partners focused on but not limited to programming, internships, clinical experiences, gap-year programs, summer programs, and early selection agreements.
Responsible for development and implementation of special programs and initiatives, including the MCAT prep course. May teach up to two sections of the HPA internship course each semester as needed. Serves as the advisor for several HPA-related student organizations and oversees the recruitment, training, and supervision of HPA student ambassadors.
Regular attendance is an essential function to perform the duties of this position.
Job Requirements:
Master’s degree required.
5 years of experience advising and mentoring college students required.
Prior experience advising students toward careers in health professions, program development, managing external partnerships, supervising professional staff, and recruitment and admissions preferred
Must have excellent organization, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
