The Brown University Health Academic Center and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Rhode Island and Miriam Hospitals in Providence, RI is recruiting a Director of the Transfusion Medicine Division. As an academic non-profit medical institution, the successful applicant will also receive an appointment at Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University at the rank of Associate Professor or higher.

The applicant should possess an MD, DO, or MBBS with board certification (or board eligibility) from the American Board of Pathology in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, and meet all state licensure and other requirements necessary for the practice of medicine in Rhode Island. Experience in coagulation studies is preferable and subspecialty training in Molecular Diagnostics, Hematopathology, or AP subspecialities is also desirable but not required. Candidates must have experience directing a high-complexity laboratory, preferably in a university hospital or comparable institution. Candidates applying for this position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor must have reputation and scholarly achievements appropriate to this level.

The blood bank laboratory is accredited by the AABB, CAP and the FDA. With a nascent cellular therapy service, the blood bank also aims for future accreditation with the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy. The service transfuses greater than 20,000 component products per year. The apheresis service performs approximately 350 procedures per year including red cell/plasma exchanges, and CD34 stem cell collections for autologous transplant. As additional cellular therapy services such as allogeneic stem cell and CAR-T/CAR-NK transplants will be added to the future list of services experience in this field is highly desirable.

The position will include responsibilities in directing Transfusion Medicine at the system level, including collaborating with blood bank sections at all affiliated hospitals, coordinating the services with other laboratory sections, and working with medical specialists throughout the medical system in addressing institutional needs in transfusion medicine.

The candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an independent research program in the general area of transfusion medicine and blood banking. The candidate will also be expected to participate in teaching Pathology residents, teaching Pathology and Laboratory Medicine courses, supervising clerkships for medical students at Brown University and/or in providing instructional support to the medical technology training programs in the Department of Pathology.
