"Director Rutgers Animal Care"

Position Summary:

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Director Rutgers Animal Care for the Animal Care division of the Office for Research.

The Office for Research's core mission is to advance Rutgers's preeminence in research. The Office for Research (OFR or Research) provides essential services university-wide that support faculty research and scholarship. The OFR teams support identifying sponsored award funding opportunities, submission of grant proposals, post-award financial management, negotiation of contracts, research regulatory affairs, intellectual property and commercialization activities, core services, and animal care provided by the Rutgers University Animal Care (RUAC) organization, which manages the care of a wide variety of vertebrate species used in biomedical and agricultural research and instruction on all campuses.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

• Oversees and administers the laboratory animal care and use program in accordance with established institutional policies, animal welfare laws, granting agency requirements and standards for accreditation by AAALAC International.
• Handles the veterinary care and husbandry activities at multiple sites across Newark, New Brunswick, Piscataway, and Camden campuses.
• Oversees scientific animal endeavors and veterinary care of research animals.
• Serves on the Rutgers Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) on each campus.
• Provides oversight of the University's Veterinary Residency Program.
• Partners with key stakeholders across the organization to align strategies and drive business outcomes.

Minimum Education and Experience:

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent and a license to practice in at least one state.
• Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).
• A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in laboratory animal medicine which includes institutional veterinary research (academic, industrial or government), including a minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience.

Equipment Utilized:

• Surgical equipment such as anesthetic machines and physiological monitors.
• Diagnostic equipment such as microscopes and centrifuges.
• Cage wash equipment and individually ventilated cages for housing rodents.
• Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office and custom animal care and use management software.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

• Ability to walk and stand for several hours when conducting inspections of animal facilities and laboratories.
• Ability to travel to various facilities on multiple campuses.
