About the opportunity

We are currently seeking to appoint an outstanding academic at the level of Professor as Director, Save Sight Institute (SSI). This is a transformational leadership opportunity to guide SSI through its next phase of development. The Director will oversee the ongoing integration of the Institute's research functions, with a strong focus on enhancing its scientific impact.

The role involves leading an inspiring, multidisciplinary team of researchers engaged in a wide range of studies-from discovery science to clinical and applied research. Key responsibilities include fostering collaboration across research disciplines, ensuring robust governance frameworks, and nurturing the next generation of researchers in vision and eye health.

The successful candidate will bring strategic vision and leadership to advance the Institute's global reputation for innovation and excellence in ophthalmology. This role is ideally suited to a dynamic leader with a passion for scientific advancement and a strong commitment to mentoring and developing talent within a collaborative, high-performing environment.

Where appropriate, the successful candidate may be eligible for a clinical appointment at an affiliated hospital.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

  • A PhD or equivalent higher research degree in a relevant academic field, along with other appropriate professional qualifications, such as Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
  • An international reputation as a leader in their discipline, supported by a strong research profile, including competitive research grants, high-quality publications, and recognition within the broader research community.
  • A distinguished record of supervising higher degree research students, demonstrated by successful student outcomes, impact on learning, recognition through awards or prizes, and innovation in supervision.
  • A wide network of established relationships with key academic, industry, and professional partners and stakeholders, which can be leveraged to enhance the profile of the Faculty and University.
  • Significant experience in people leadership and management within the higher education sector, with a demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor, and support others to succeed.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of key strategic issues facing the higher education and research sectors.

Sponsorship / work rights for Australia

Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance will be provided if required.

Term and remuneration

This is a fixed term full-time appointment for 5 years. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.

Your employment is conditional upon the completion of all role required pre-employment or background checks in terms satisfactory to the University. Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements.
