CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of the Honors College is responsible for shaping and advancing the university’s undergraduate academic experience. This involves strategic oversight of curriculum development, student success initiatives, general education programs, high-impact practices, and honors education. The office works collaboratively with faculty, chairs, deans, and other campus stakeholders to ensure academic excellence, equitable access, and student achievement across all undergraduate programs. Additionally, the office promotes educational innovation and provides leadership in ensuring excellence in undergraduate education. Ultimately, these efforts are aimed at providing students with a distinctive academic experience, promoting student success, and enhancing campus-wide retention and graduation rates.

Reporting to the Interim Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of the Honors College, the Director of Undergraduate Education promotes innovation in and excellence of undergraduate education across the University. By providing strategic leadership, the director will work to position UD at the forefront of undergraduate education pedagogy and practice and will coordinate efforts for the ongoing improvement of students’ retention and graduation rates.

The director helps promote and support academic excellence and curriculum innovation and works to facilitate the success of undergraduate students across campus. In doing so, the director collaborates with undergraduate education and student success leaders from across campus to create a robust student support network. The director oversees the Undergraduate Education unit, which encompasses (a) University Studies, (b) Academic Coaching and Tutoring, (c) the First-Year Experience, and (d) the UD Scholars program. In representing the provost's office in promoting and ensuring academic excellence and student success, the director serves as a liaison to the Faculty Senate Undergraduate Studies and General Education Committees.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve on the leadership team of the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of the Honors College.
  • Promote innovation in and excellence of undergraduate education across the University.
  • Provide leadership in developing campus-wide student success strategies.
  • Collaborate with undergraduate education and student success leaders from across campus to implement a robust student support network.
  • In collaboration with departments, colleges, and campus-wide academic excellence and student success programs, innovate, create, and support efforts to ensure ongoing improvement of students’ retention and graduation rates.
  • Liaison with the Faculty Senate Undergraduate Studies Committee.
  • Liaison with the Faculty Senate General Education Committee.
  • Support the University Studies program and supervise its director
  • Support the Academic Coaching and Tutoring program and supervise its director.
  • Provide strategic oversight of UD’s First Year Experience efforts and associated programming and supervise its director.
  • Support the ongoing evolution of UD Scholars Program.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree with eight years of related experience in educational innovation, curricular development and implementation, and leadership promoting student success, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated involvement and leadership in higher education forums related to undergraduate education excellence and student success.
  • Broad understanding of innovations and excellence in undergraduate education.
  • Experience with department, college, and university-level creation and administration of undergraduate curricula and degree programs.
  • Experience with educational assessment methodologies and implementing improvements based on those assessments.
  • Understanding of technological platforms that support excellence in education.
  • Strong leadership and administrative skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and include others.
  • Ability to collaborate and build consensus.
  • Ability to convene faculty from multiple disciplines to achieve strategic outcomes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an enthusiastic and optimistic style of expression.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience managing a diverse workforce.
  • Experience building partnerships outside the university.
