Job Summary/Basic Function: The director of Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is responsible for authorship, development and maintenance of all VUB services and project activities. VUB is funded by a U.S. department of Education grant which serves 144 veterans who are low income and will be first generation participants and enhances social and educational growth. VUB also increases the sensitivity and understanding of higher education personnel to the needs of veterans whereby helping to eliminate educational, physical and psychological barriers which impede the academic and personal pursuits of veterans. The VUB program is designed to motivate and assist veterans in the development of academic skills to be successful in a program of postsecondary education. VUB serves low income, first generation veterans along the Wasatch Front and has a presence on the WSU campus and as well on the Salt Lake Community College campus. The director is a valuable voice for veterans in the communities served by the grant and as well on the campus where the program has a presence. The director will be an active member of organizations who serve veterans, will be a mentor for the programs participants and demonstrate leadership for the programs staff. The VUB director manages four contracted staff and oversees the expenditure of a $300,000+ annual budget.
Required Qualifications:
- Masters degree in an educational discipline
- Five years of administrative experience
- Experience working with minority, low income, first generation and physically disabled individuals
- Valid Utah Drivers License
Preferred Qualifications:
- Veteran status or experience working with veteran population
- Former TRIO staff or participant
- Grant writing experience
- Experience managing employees
- Experience working with community organizations
- Preference for individuals who have overcome the disadvantages of circumstances like those of the target population served

Physical Requirements of this position: Light work. Exerting up to 20 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Use of arm and/or leg controls exerting forces greater than that for sedentary work.
Visual Acuity Requirements including color, depth perception and field of vision: Required to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; using a computer terminal; extensive reading.
The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position: None. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
