Assists with data collection, entry, and tracking; reviews medical or research data for study eligibility; and helps prepare documentation for compliance and reporting. Contributes to reviews to the IRB, literature reviews, reports, and other study-related materials while coordinating routine lab or departmental operations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist with cleaning datasets, running analyses, checking for accuracy, and preparing preliminary summaries with guidance from the PI.
  • Coordinate the collection and organization of qualitative data and ensure accuracy and completeness of study records.
  • Communicate with research partners to obtain required data and documentation; support processing of study-related invoices or expenses.
  • Assist as needed with manuscripts and grant materials by drafting sections, conducting literature reviews, preparing tables or figures, and helping with abstract and manuscript submissions.
  • Prepare and submit IRB modifications, renewals, and continuing reviews, and maintain protocol documentation.
  • Support weekly research team meetings by preparing agendas, taking minutes, and tracking action items.
  • Assist with developing quantitative and qualitative data collection tools, gathering data, performing descriptive analyses, and preparing summary reports.
  • Share study updates and results with team members and collaborate with colleagues on project tasks as needed.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

The Herdon Lehr Division of Plastic Surgery Research Scholar position is an opportunity for current medical students or medical residents to work closely with Dr. Stephen Kovach as the mentor/Principal Investigator. The primary responsibility of the Research Scholar is to serve as a member of a research team. This opportunity is designed to provide research experience for those in training to become a future medical provider interested in pursuing a career in surgery/plastic surgery. The Herndon Lehr Research Scholar will be responsible for organizing, gaining approval, and managing the majority of the research that is produced within the division under direction from senior clinical research staff. The Division of Plastic Surgery Research Scholar will develop skills in planning, implementation, and conducting retrospective and prospective clinical trials as well as managing and analyzing institutional and national datasets. The Herndon Lehr Research Scholar will also film select surgical case led by Dr. Kovach. The position will include the following objectives:

  1. Gain an understanding of the importance of human protection and laws which govern clinical research
  2. Become proficient at generating study designs for new protocols and submitting to the IRB
  3. Create databases to hold abstracted data for outcomes and other studies of interest
  4. Monitor and analyze data for interpretation.
  5. Implement study design and actively recruit and collect data for prospective clinical trials
  6. Prepare abstracts for scientific meetings and manuscripts for publication
  7. Assist in preparation and full participation of divisional quarterly research meetings
  8. Film surgical cases in the operating room and edit footage for use
  9. Prepare and deliver accepted studies for conference posters and presentations

Education Requirement

Current medical/surgical resident or current medical student who at minimum completed first year of medical school. We require two letters of recommendation and a personal statement for the application process.

This position is contingent upon grant funding.
