Description of Work:

The University of Nebraska State Museum is seeking a full-time Education Programs Coordinator. Located in Morrill Hall on the UNL city campus, this position coordinates, develops, and helps deliver the museum's in-person Gallery programs for pK-12 and postsecondary students and associated learning kit program, and assists the education supervisor with K12 educator professional development and other learning programs.

This position coordinates the museum's science communication undergraduate intern program and develops and delivers informal education programming for families. Occasionally, this position provides educational program support for our sister museums, Ashfall Fossil Beds and Trailside Museum.

This position also assists the Visitor Services reservation staff by acting as the primary point of contact should the Visitor Services team need to escalate a school reservation query. This person will communicate program content information to teachers, address content queries, help establish reservation policies and procedures, and be proficient in museum reservation software. Other project-based duties may be assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in education (with science coursework), natural history or life sciences, or similar field and One year (1) experience in working with all ages, developing lessons and/or programs, and managing part-time staff.
  • Knowledge of museum and education trends and demonstrated ability to manage part- time staff in a museum, science center, zoo or aquarium environment (or similar non profit institution).
  • Knowledge of how to develop lessons or programs utilizing best practices in education.
  • Ability to effectively lead museum programs for pK-12 and postsecondary students, in addition to training staff and students to lead programs.
  • Excellent writing ability to assist with reports and grant applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in education (with science coursework).
  • Teaching background with science coursework.
  • Experience working with all ages, particularly school aged students.
  • Experience working in an informal education setting such as a museum, science center, zoo, or similar non-profit organization.
  • Experience supervising a small staff.
  • Excellent writing ability to assist with reports and grant applications.
  • Knowledge of life sciences and natural history. Knowledge of current trends, resources, and state/national education standards in formal education (pK-12; postsecondary).
  • Ability to effectively lead museum programs for pK-12 and postsecondary students, in addition to training staff and students to lead programs.
  • Ability to supervise, schedule, and lead part-time staff and students.
  • Ability to set daily priorities, and work independently and as part of a larger staff.
  • Able to effectively network and build relationships with teachers, students, and schools.
  • Office 365 and basic software skills
  • Teaching certificate (elementary or secondary with endorsement in a science field)

Posted Salary: $44,000/yr. minimum
