Job Summary

The BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) at the University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) invites applications for an emergency medicine physician–scientist faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. We are seeking a well-trained and innovative investigator to advance the technical dimensions and human-centered implications of artificial intelligence (AI) as they impact medicine and health. By performing basic and translational research across at least one of four targeted domains, this faculty member will undertake creative and integrated AI-medical and health research as well as support the training and development of the next generation of scientists and practitioners of AI in medical research and clinical care.

This position is part of the Wisconsin Research, Innovation and Scholarly Excellence (RISE) Initiative. Through accelerated and strategic faculty hiring, research infrastructure enhancement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and increased student and educational opportunities, RISE addresses complex societal challenges of importance to the state, nation and world. Building on UW–Madison’s strengths, RISE expands the University’s successful track record of connecting with communities and industry on collaborative solutions.

Over the next three academic years, UW–Madison will substantially increase current hiring levels, bringing 150 new RISE faculty to campus. Candidates hired through RISE will join a community of scholars working across disciplines, schools and colleges on research, teaching and outreach endeavors. The community will engage regularly in venues such as seminar series and colloquia to share ongoing projects and identify opportunities to work together. The University will support the community, facilitating access to research infrastructure, and funding to support broad and rich collaboration.

RISE AI scholars will participate in the RISE-AI Collaboration HQ in the UW-Madison Data Science Institute (DSI). Their goal is to foster new research communities built around topical focus areas, and organizing teams to incubate novel research ideas. RISE-AI Collaboration HQ is particularly interested in multidisciplinary topics that bring many different perspectives to the table and that include new RISE faculty.

This effort includes a portfolio of events, positioning research teams to pursue extramural research funding, and supporting investments in research computing infrastructure available to all of campus. The group will catalyze research communities centered on innovative focus areas and build connections among UW–Madison’s AI community, which includes the more than 35 new RISE-AI hires and current faculty, staff and students. DSI will integrate new research partnerships with existing efforts on campus by leveraging its extensive network of affiliates. The research focus of the faculty member must fall within these four domains:

• Advancing AI and foundation data science: studying advanced methodological approaches in AI relevant to health care;
• Integrated diagnostics: studying AI-enabled screening, diagnostics, therapeutics, treatment monitoring, and decision-making;
• Precision Population Health: researching improvements to the health of our community through precision prevention and intervention;
• Molecular Discovery: identifying novel targets and drugs to uncover entirely new biological discoveries.

Position details include:

• This position is full or part-time; 80%-100% FTE
• This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.
• This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law every four years.

Research Program

Faculty develop and sustain extramurally funded research programs in the technical dimensions and human-centered implications of artificial intelligence (AI) as they impact medicine and health. Success in this role includes obtaining external funding, publishing in high-impact journals, presenting at national and international meetings, mentoring trainees and junior faculty, and assuming leadership roles in professional organizations. Faculty contributions are expected to lead to national recognition through visiting professorships, invited publications, and honors.

Clinical Care

Faculty provide outstanding emergency care across DEM clinical sites, including University Hospital, a regional referral center caring for the highest acuity and most complex patients. Our teams serve diverse communities in and around Madison and are supported by exceptional advanced practice providers (APP), nurses, technicians, social workers, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, case managers, care coordinators, and others committed to delivering the highest quality care.

Education

Faculty contribute broadly to medical and AI education at UW–Madison, teaching undergraduate and graduate students, medical students, residents, fellows, and APPs. Educational activities include classroom instruction, small group learning, simulation, and supervised clinical care, with opportunities to lead courses, mentor trainees, and guide scholarly projects. 5-10% FTE will be dedicated to the department’s education mission, with the exact percentage determined at the chair’s discretion.

Service

The successful applicant will participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of the DEM, the UW SMPH, the UW-Madison, and UW Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.

Required Qualifications

• Must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges, by the start date of the position.
• Unrestricted Wisconsin Medical Licensure required by the start date.
• Board eligibility or board certification through the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) required by the start date.
• Completion of an accredited Emergency Medicine residency training program or completion of an accredited Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship training program by the start date.

Preferred Qualifications

For an appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank on tenure track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the UW Divisional Committee guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the tenure track.

• Demonstrated research focus in AI as applied to medicine or health, with clear alignment to at least one of the following domains:
  + Advancing AI and foundation data science
  + Integrated diagnostics
  + Precision population health
  + Molecular discovery
• Evidence of scholarly productivity, such as peer reviewed publications, preprints, or equivalent research.
• Demonstrated potential for an independent or collaborative research program
• Independent faculty member with active extramural funding in the area of emergency care and AI
• Record of publications and presentations at national/international meetings in emergency care and AI
• Experience teaching university courses and mentoring students (undergraduate, medical, graduate) and/or postdoctoral fellows
