Applications are invited for the Albert “Pete” Shepherd, PhD Distinguished Chair in Physiology Research. This Endowed Chair honors the legacy of Dr. Pete Shepherd, an innovator, entrepreneur, pioneer in physiology research and medical instrumentation, and a graduate of the UMMC Department of Physiology & Biophysics.

Applicants will be considered for ranks of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor and must have a Ph.D. or M.D. degree with appropriate postdoctoral research experience. We are seeking candidates who use innovative, cutting-edge approaches to address physiological problems that have significant translational potential in one or more of the following general areas:

  • Cardiovascular physiology/pathophysiology
  • Renal physiology and pathophysiology
  • Endocrinology with focus on obesity, metabolism, and metabolic diseases
  • Neurosciences with a focus on the hypothalamus, brainstem, and/or autonomic nervous system
  • Genetics, epigenetics, and developmental programming

Candidates should have a robust record of innovative research accomplishments, including publications in leading journals, extramural research funding, and a well-defined research vision. The Shepherd Distinguished Chair will receive a highly competitive salary and an excellent start-up package.

The Department of Physiology & Biophysics has a long history of international prominence in cardiovascular and renal physiology and in the pathophysiology of hypertension and related cardiorenal and metabolic disorders. The Department is the home of 4 multidisciplinary research centers and offers outstanding core facilities and generous laboratory space in the modern state-of-the-art Arthur C. Guyton Research Center. There is a large group of prominent, NIH-funded researchers working in the areas of cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases who offer excellent opportunities for collaboration. The Department ranked in the top 10 percent in total NIH funding among all physiology departments for the past 10 years and its members have served in leadership positions of multiple professional societies. UMMC has a large, diverse patient population and is the home of the Jackson Heart Study, an NIH-sponsored study of risk factors for cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disease in >5300 African Americans. Additional information about the Department of Physiology & Biophysics can be found at https://www.umc.edu/physiology/ and an overview of UMMC can be found at: https://www.umc.edu/UMMC/About-Us/About-Us-Overview.html

Integral to its education and research missions, UMMC provides wide-ranging patient care programs, including bariatric surgery and weight management programs. Three specialized hospitals on the Jackson campus include the only children's hospital in Mississippi, a women and infants' hospital, and a critical care hospital, along with University Hospital.

Jackson and the surrounding communities have a moderate climate, low housing costs, excellent schools and numerous recreational opportunities. Applicants should send, via email attachments (PDF or Word files), their curriculum vitae (with publications and extramural research funding) as well as a brief cover letter summarizing their interests and qualifications to Dr. John E. Hall at jehall@umc.edu. All applications will be treated confidentially. Review of applications will continue until positions are filled. Equal opportunity employer, M/F/D/V.
