Job Summary:

The Energy Engineer is responsible for the development and implementation of the department's energy management program. This includes engineering analysis of existing building systems and proposed new installations to meet energy performance goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure appropriate instrumentation and metering devices are in place for production/consumption measurement.
  • Oversee energy utilization to optimize cost performance.
  • Support utilities accounting and billing.
  • Advise on utilities purchase and associated policy.
  • Provide expertise in available utility company rebates programs.
  • Provide department representation to outside parties in support of energy goals.
  • Oversee energy benchmarking program in support of campus sustainability goals.
  • Expand the current use of data analytics systems to aid with tracking and review of energy performance for all supported buildings.
  • Responsible for reporting annual building energy consumption to Benchmarking Colorado.
  • Responsible party for EnergyStar Portfolio Manager property setup and data entry through various sources

Central Utility Plant Support

  • Provide engineering support and energy analysis for the operation of the Central Utility Plant.
  • Manage measurement and metering of purchased third-party utilities for the production and distribution of campus thermal utilities.
  • Provide analysis of campus consumption of utilities and support rate design establishment efforts.

Project Support

  • Development of engineering standards and design document review & comment.
  • Use engineering judgment to either accept or suggest revisions to project engineering documents to obtain long term department value.
  • Support project commissioning efforts to obtain high performance projects minimizing energy consumption.

Facilities Engineering

  • Assist in campus buildings deferred maintenance planning including assistance in the facilities audit process.
  • Provide support with analysis of potential deferred maintenance projects for prioritization.

Work Location:

Onsite at the Anschutz campus, located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering, facilities management, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
    • Substitution: An advanced/post-graduate degree (Master's or Doctorate) may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis if the degree is in a field of study relevant and/or directly related to the industry and work assignment.
  • 4-6 years of professional industry experience

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensure through the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.
  • Certification as a Certified Energy Manager, or the ability to attain this certification within the first six months of employment.
  • Participation and certification from programs within the Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA) and/or the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) organizations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel spreadsheets.
  • Excellent oral communication skills with the ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Familiarity with chillers, mechanical systems, boilers, steam systems and electrical systems
  • Ability to administer, effectively plan, organize and direct a wide variety of energy tracking program responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of facilities management
  • Knowledge of building systems, utilities, maintenance operations,
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Certification as a Certified Energy Manager, or the ability to attain this certification within the first six months of employment.
  • This role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as: $86,490 - $115,897.
