About the Department

The English as a Second Language Department at Los Medanos College is proud to serve a multilingually and multiculturally diverse population of students from a broad range of backgrounds, including (im)migrants [including internally displaced and possibly returnee migrants], asylum-seekers, refugees, undocumented students, generation 1.5 students, students transferring from our adult schools, international students, and other under-represented and/or underserved student groups. We value this rich and enriching diversity, and we recognize that students come to us with different goals and varying levels of ability, and we strive to create a strengths-based ESL program that is responsive to their needs. In addition to our certificate-based language offerings, we are delighted to have developed and now provide ESL college student orientation, navigation, and engagement classes; enrollment and registration supports; ESL peer tutoring and peer advising; ESL-focused academic counseling; student club and program activities; and outreach tailored to both the College community and the East Contra Costa community it serves.
Our expanding program offers intermediate and advanced academic ESL courses that build on our entry/bridge general ESL courses in a unique mirrored credit/noncredit structure. These courses take place across multiple modalities - on-campus, online, and hybrid. In all areas of LMC's ESL program, equity and anti-racism are at the core of our work and inform our pedagogy, extra-curricular support for students, and faculty professional learning and engagement.
