Starting Salary Range: $70,559 (Class II, Step 6) - $97,415 (VII, Step 10) Annually for a 10-month contract

WHO WE'RE SEEKING

Grossmont College seeks academic professionals who are dedicated to equitable and superior student success outcomes for all students. We are looking for candidates who will demonstrate a history and willingness to continue to learn about varied, relevant teaching and learning practices, assessment strategies, and educationally sound supports that will sustain a diverse and changing student body and college service area.

We seek colleagues who create positive, engaging learning and development environments in class and throughout the college that challenge and support students to aspire to, and achieve, their full potential.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under an assigned supervisor, regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the college and district. This position may include a combination of day and evening, on-site and off-site teaching assignments and is being offered by a college strongly committed to serving a diverse student population. Instructors will be expected to perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

  • Master's in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis
  • OR Bachelor's in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND master's in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language
  • OR the equivalent

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Academic preparation for, and successful experience in, teaching beginning, intermediate, and advanced ESL, including academic reading, writing, grammar, listening, and speaking, which could include integrated skills classes, at an accredited post-secondary institution within the previous five years.
  • Experience using effective pedagogical approaches with college or university students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to use various methods to evaluate and assess student writing, reading, listening, speaking, and cultural skills effectively and to analyze assessment results to inform course improvement.
  • Knowledge and experience with materials and assessment development.
  • Experience with varied approaches such as genre-based approach, project-based learning, team-based learning, Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS), integrated-skill thematic modules, or community service learning.
  • Knowledge of the issues related to AI use in the classroom.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to remain current in ESL through professional growth and service opportunities such as workshop presentations, recent workshop and conference attendance, collaborative teaching endeavors, classroom-based research, and organizational membership and involvement.
  • Possession of excellent fluency and accuracy in spoken and written English.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will also be evaluated for preferred qualifications in the following:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills through experience in ESL program design and coordination, coordination with non-credit ESL, project coordination, level leadership, or ESL teacher training, mentoring, and evaluation.
  • Advocacy for ESL students and program needs on the campus and in the community, which could include serving on committees and task forces and making presentations.
  • Knowledge and experience with assessing students for ESL level placement, as well as new student orientation.
