Position Summary:

The Lab and Experiential Learning Coordinator for the department of Environment & Sustainability (ENV) supports student learning in labs on field trips, maintains lab and field equipment for the department, and is a leader for department safety.

Job Description:

Job duties:

Lab

  • Ensure that lab users know and follow safety protocols related to safety.
  • Maintain and provide personal protective equipment to lab users.
  • Manage hazardous wastes.
  • Inventory lab equipment and replace items as needed.
  • Create and maintain a safe, clutter-free lab environment.
  • Create and update signage related to lab use.
  • Calibrate and maintain equipment.
  • Create and update handouts for use of lab equipment.
  • Manage equipment inventory and check-outs.
  • Prepare equipment ahead of labs upon faculty request.
  • Support student researchers to safely complete their research with lab equipment.
  • Communicate with lab coordinators of affiliate departments.
  • Maintain up-to-date trainings and certifications (e.g., ACS).
  • Reports safety concerns to the department chair and EHS officer.

Field

  • Inventory field equipment and replace items as needed.
  • Create and update handouts for use of field equipment.
  • Prepare equipment ahead of field trips upon faculty request.
  • Provide transportation support for field trips.
  • Support learning activities during field trips.
  • Clean, de-contaminate, and maintain equipment following field trips.
  • Support student researchers to safely complete their research with field equipment.
  • Maintain up-to-date trainings and certifications (e.g., driver safety).
  • Reports safety concerns to the department chair and EHS officer.

Department

  • Communicate updates and reminders about safety certifications and expectations to department faculty and staff.
  • Attend department meetings as requested.
  • Represent ENV at admissions events, student affairs events, science fairs/camps etc. as possible.
  • Collaborate on projects to enhance laboratory and field-based learning.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Must have graduated, or will graduate from an accredited undergraduate program by July 1, 2026, with a Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with laboratory and field safety and management.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time, and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to work on a team.

Reports To: Chair of Environment & Sustainability

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, talk, reach, stoop, and/or kneel to handle lab and field equipment.
  • Ability to lift and transport light to moderate lab and field equipment.

Travel:

Less than 5% per year travel is expected.

Position Details:

Exempt | Full-Time | Temporary | Year-Round Typical work hours: 80 hours per 2-week period

Compensation

The salary range is $50,000 to $52,500, plus a comprehensive benefits package
