Primary Responsibilities:
Department: Title III STEM LTS
Purpose of Job: Works with the Rio Grande Joint Venture to develop an understanding of invertebrate community response to in-stream restoration practices in the Big Bend and Davis Mountains area of Far West Texas. This position will work with the Rio Grande Joint Venture conservation delivery staff to develop and implement a sampling protocol for aquatic and semi-terrestrial invertebrates in intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams in the region. Invertebrate community will be compared between stream reaches with and without restoration structures to make inferences about invertebrate community structure and food web dynamics.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Write a literature review of existing research on aquatic and semi-terrestrial invertebrates in intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams
- Prepare a sampling implementation plan covering multiple riparian habitats and invertebrate taxa
- Assist with collection of field data using invertebrate sampling techniques
- Help to organize and analyze related field data and specimens
- Activities will be both office and field based (approximately 60/40%). Field based activities will require hiking through rough country along streams
- Other duties as assigned
- Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others; must always exercise due caution and practice safe work habits
Supervision: direct supervision from Mentor Nick Loveland with the Rio Grande Joint Venture for day to day instruction. Sul Ross staff will also provide mentorship within the Lobo Explore STEM Internship Program.
STEM Internship Program: This position is part of the Title III STEM Lobo Track to Success (LTS) SRSU STEM Internship Program. Along with the normal job duties, the student will learn from the mentor supervisor about the STEM workforce, different career pathways, research, and more. Students will gain knowledge, experience, and professional connections in the STEM field. Students will have access to professional development tools throughout the internship program (resume building, interview practices, etc.).
