The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) is the home of the University of Michigan’s Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health. MICHR is part of a national, collaborative consortium that is focused on bringing more health solutions to all people more quickly by advancing translational science. The field of translational science aims to build an evidence base of scientific and operational approaches that improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of translational research across a range of diseases and conditions. MICHR has the unique charge of examining the translational research ecosystem at a systems level to determine where common pitfalls exist; developing novel solutions to these challenges; demonstrating their effectiveness; and disseminating improvements widely. MICHR is a dynamic organization that serves as a hub of innovation and experimentation to advance research in the science of translation and accelerate the realization of interventions that improve human health.

MICHR is seeking candidates with experience in evaluation and quality improvement to coordinate and support related research projects conducted across MICHR programs. Candidates with clear and substantive interests in clinical and translational science are desired. MICHR aims to recruit an experienced Evaluation & Quality Improvement Coordinator capable of tracking, supporting, and leading clinical and translational science projects in collaboration with a highly interdisciplinary set of research teams working with MICHR and across the nation-wide CTSA Consortium. Competitive candidates will be able to demonstrate the capacity to grow in this position by advancing their scientific skills and interests.

  • Work with the EQI team to design, develop and implement needs assessments, continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives, and program evaluations.
  • Gather evaluation and assessment data, supervise EQI's data collection and auditing processes, perform data analysis, and interpret results.
  • Use systematic literature reviews to inform the current state of translational science as a distinctive field and identify gaps in the literature and opportunities to address them.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses, interpret and synthesize results, and disseminate results to internal and external audiences, including through manuscript publication and contributions to manuscript writing.
  • Prepare evaluation results and other data for manuscript publication and contribute to manuscript writing.
  • Work with MICHR programs and teams to develop evaluation & CQI tools and resources; provide direct support to teams to facilitate their design, development and implementation of CQI initiatives.
  • Identify and recommend evaluation and CQI methods and frameworks to MICHR programs and teams to address relevant clinical and translational science questions.
  • Develop and lead a learning community structure to support MICHR teams' evaluation and CQI activity; develop evaluation plans and CQI protocols for MICHR teams when assigned.
  • Coordinate MICHR programs' CQI initiatives and integrate programs' needs assessment and evaluation results into CQI proposals and reports to inform institutional decision-making.
  • Track, assess, and report on MICHR program's CQI and evaluation activity.
  • Collaborate with MICHR Communications to prepare high-quality, tailored evaluation reports and materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Identify relevant facilitators and barriers that affect MICHR's CQI initiatives and propose, design and test solutions to improve productivity and/or quality of health research.
  • Present findings to leadership, advisory boards, and internal and external collaborators.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field (Research Area Specialist Intermediate level)
  • 5 or more years of experience in quality improvement and program evaluation.
  • Experience with a range program evaluation methods and frameworks including mixed-methods and quality improvement.
  • Demonstrated quantitative data analysis skills; including experience using R, SPSS, Stata, or to manage and analyze large data sets.
  • Experience designing and/or coordinating evaluation and quality improvement plans.
  • Experience with systems evaluation and continuous quality improvement frameworks.
  • Understanding of and training in using data visualization to present information to varied audiences (e.g., data dashboards, and other visualization methods).
  • Demonstrated experience with problem-solving issues with evaluation processes and data as part of a team and independently.
  • Strong ability to prioritize tasks and manage time independently to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills with the ability to work with internal team members and external partners.
  • Demonstrated experience in evaluation, and quality improvement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD Preferred for the Research Area Specialist Associate level.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical and translational science.
  • Peer-reviewed publications about clinical and translational science topics.

Day Shift

This is a 3-year term-limited hybrid position with the possibility of becoming permanent based on need, available funding, and candidate performance. This position requires at least 2 in-person days at our office on the U-M Ann Arbor Central Campus. Regular travel to Ann Arbor throughout the year is required. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
