Position Summary

WashU’s Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) advances the university’s educational mission by integrating evidence-based pedagogical support for faculty, assistance for learners, and classroom learning technology in service of academic excellence.

The Center comprises three units. Educational Development supports faculty in development of innovation and teaching excellence and provides formal training in effective teaching for graduate students, postdocs, and undergraduate TAs. Classroom Services facilitates the use of state-of-the-art physical learning spaces as well as digital educational technologies. The Learning Center provides academic support to undergraduate students through mentoring programs, academic coaching, and the facilitation of collaborative learning communities among students in foundational courses.

The Executive Director of the Center for Teaching & Learning should have demonstrated expertise in applying evidence-based approaches to faculty and/or student development in teaching and learning, as well as effective integration of educational technologies, including forward-leaning pedagogical support for the integration of artificial intelligence in higher education.

This full-time staff position reports to the Vice Provost for Educational Initiatives in collaboration with the Vice Provosts for Faculty Affairs and Graduate Education, with support from the CTL’s Faculty Advisory Board.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Leads the Center’s educational development, student support and classroom strategies by advancing the adoption of innovative, evidence-based practices in teaching and learning by faculty and students, and by creating effective, inclusive learning environments through classroom facilities and educational technologies.
  • Oversees day-to-day management of the Center, including its budget, personnel, program development and service delivery, facilities, and communications. Fosters a positive and productive work environment for CTL staff, including mentorship and professional development opportunities.
  • Works closely with the Office of the Provost, school leadership, and other stakeholders (including IT, Office of University Registrar, Facilities, and Student Affairs) to determine priorities for the next era of innovation and excellence for the Center. Implements programs and delivers services responsive to these priorities, including the appropriate use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.
  • Advances a robust strategy for communication with campus constituents to promote programs and highlight successes.
  • Leads strategy development in collaboration with key campus partners in support of instructional technology, including the libraries, IT, and both campus-wide and school-centered systems that support student learning.
  • Provides instructional training appropriate to school needs for graduate students, postdocs, and undergraduate peer educators (e.g., TAs, tutors, academic mentors) through credentialing programs, workshops, consultations, and other programming.
  • Fosters and sustains partnerships between the CTL and the schools, their academic programs, and Student Affairs to ensure information sharing and alignment around student learning support services and professional development opportunities (e.g., peer educators).
  • Identifies emerging trends in teaching and learning (e.g. artificial intelligence) as they become strategically actionable for schools or groups within the university; contributes to the development of university policies and procedures.
  • Conducts ongoing needs assessments to determine the best use of Center for Teaching & Learning resources and staff.
  • Coordinates with other entities on campus on issues of teaching assessment and evaluation.
  • Represents WashU on issues of pedagogical innovation, advances in instructional technology, and student academic support in the broader professional community.

Required Qualifications

Education:
Ph.D., M.D. Or Equivalent Terminal Or Doctoral Degree.

Certifications/Professional Licenses:
No specific certification/professional license is required for this position.

Work Experience:
Progressive Experience In Administration Supporting Innovation In Teaching And Learning, Including Supervisory, Budgeting, And Strategic Planning Experience. (10 Years)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories and practical applications of higher education teaching, learning outcomes, and academic assessment.
  • Teaching experience at the collegiate level as instructor of record and demonstrated record of superb teaching skills.
  • Passion for teaching, learning, student and faculty support and commitment to advancing its centrality to WashU’s mission.
  • Experience developing and implementing initiatives to ensure faculty are effectively trained, supported, and integrated into teaching and learning innovations, and/or initiatives and interventions to support student academic success.
  • Exceptional communication and listening skills, and the ability to work cooperatively and strategically across functions, levels, schools, and disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
  • Familiarity with grant proposal writing for educational research and projects.
