Facilities Maintenance Mechanic - Mechanical
Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director- Building Infrastructure & Trades Services, the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic is assigned to the HVAC & System Controls Shop within the Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations and works independently or as a team member under the general supervision of the Facilities Project Supervisor. The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic is a skilled generalist, performing at a journey-level in one trade with strong skills in other trades. Incumbents independently perform a variety of skilled preventative and general maintenance, repair, construction, and renovation work on facilities and systems, particularly in the electro-mechanical trades.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs the full range of skilled journey-level facility maintenance electro-mechanical work and assist, in at least one trade, with basic and advanced level maintenance and minor repair work for various trades including HVAC/Controls, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, painting, lock and electrical
- Operate, test, install, repair and perform corrective and preventative maintenance on mechanical facilities equipment and systems including HVAC and plumbing systems
- Assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing and HVAC systems
- Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations; inspect related work performed by contractors
- Tests, maintains, and repairs equipment such as generators and Automatic Transfer Switches
- Prepare standard reports
- Estimates cost, time and materials of maintenance, repair and renovation work
- Respond to service requests; diagnose problems and make necessary adjustments
- Uses computer for communicating, researching parts and specifications, coordinating, documenting work details, and recording time log
- Tests and troubleshoots parts, equipment and systems using testing tools for diagnosis
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Basic knowledge of electrical theory and mechanical principles
- Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems and renovations
- Ability to perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position
- Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals throughout the organization as well as those outside of the organization who are directly or indirectly involved with projects and/or assignments
- Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications.
- Ability to make rough sketches and to estimate the cost, time and materials of assigned work.
- Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle, utility cart, scissor lift, boom lift, and forklift (as certified) and other equipment and tools required to successfully complete assignments
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is required at time of hire for the operation of any vehicle required for this position
Required Qualifications
- Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in facility repair and maintenance, or any reasonable equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities maintenance mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
- Requires the possession of a valid California Driver’s License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation
- Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations
License
A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.
Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.
Preferred Qualifications
- 6 months of hands on experience in general facilities and systems maintenance and repair work
- 3 years of hands on experience in general facilities and systems maintenance and repair, or comparable experience as a trades assistant or laborer with demonstrated proficiency in the required duties
Compensation
Classification: Facilities Maintenance Mechanic
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,274/month - $6,528/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,355/month - $7,801/month
