Faculty, Music Theory and Composition
Austin Community College is seeking a full-time Instructor of Music Theory and Composition to teach Music Theory courses, including Theory, Sight Singing, and Applied Composition Lessons. Additional assignments depend on qualifications and departmental needs, potentially involving various instructional modalities.
The successful candidate will collaborate with music faculty on departmental vision, curriculum, standards, and accreditation. They should be an active member of professional music organizations. This is a 10.5-month contract starting in January 2026.
Job Description Summary: The ACC Music Department, part of the Division of Arts and Digital Media, prepares students for transfer to four-year institutions in performance, music education, and commercial music.
Principal Responsibilities and Duties:
- Teach Music Theory courses using appropriate instructional strategies.
- Participate in departmental governance, including curriculum review, program review, and assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Evaluate student progress and provide feedback.
- Mentor students in the Music program.
- Ensure non-discriminatory teaching practices.
- Stay current through professional development.
- Support division and department goals.
- Serve on committees and perform other tasks as assigned.
Additional Duties:
- Coordinate Music Theory and Sight Singing curriculum.
- Teach Applied Composition lessons.
Technology:
- Proficiency in computer applications, online resources, and learning management systems like Blackboard.
Principal Professional Standards:
- Appropriate use of the college's learning management system.
- Meet deadlines for attendance and grades.
- Participate in college functions.
- Maintain office hours.
- Attend meetings and comply with policies.
Required Education: Master's degree in Music or Music Education, or Master's degree with 18 graduate hours in Music.
Preferred Work Experience: Experience as an instructor of Music Theory and Composition in higher education.
Qualities of a Successful Candidate: Ethics, integrity, commitment to diversity, innovative teaching, and strong communication skills.
