Fire and Construction Safety Specialist

UMHHC Safety Management Services is seeking a fire and construction safety professional to coordinate the institutional program to maintain code compliance of the passive fire protection systems throughout our facilities.
Duties include:
- Perform field inspection, testing, and verification of UL-listed firestop systems to include destructive testing.
- Conduct audits of Michigan Health Systems smoke barriers and fire rated walls
- Thorough knowledge of using fire-stopping product manufacturer's application guides.
- Proficiency in interpreting floorplans and project drawings.
- Familiarity with project schedules
- Physical activities include bending, reaching, lifting (35 pounds), transporting ladders, climbing ladders for extended period of times, remove and replace acoustical ceiling tiles, inspect above lay in ceilings, walking for extended periods of times.
- Attend pre & post-construction meetings.
- Participate in fire drills and institutional safety programs.
- Develop and provide training to contractors on specialized UMHHC work requirements.
NOTE: The successful candidate may be an to intermediate-level or senior-level individual. Final job classification and compensation will be based on the combination of relevant educational qualifications and experience.
Required Qualifications:
- Recent coursework in current building code and NFPA codes and standards.
- Excellent public speaking and writing skills. Excellent computer skills using standard MS office programs.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to pass a physical examination to allow for emergency response and wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs.
Senior Level:
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in fire safety engineering, fire science, occupational safety with fire science emphasis, or a related technical field or equivalent. State license as a Michigan Fire Inspector. NFPA certified Fire Inspector 1 and 3 to 5 years of related experience.
Intermediate Level:
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in fire safety engineering, fire science, occupational safety with fire science emphasis, or a related technical field or equivalent and 2 to 3 years of related experience.
- Successfully completed installation training from two or more national firestop product manufacturers.
- Current CFI or ability to obtain CFI.
- Recent professional experience coordinating fire barrier management programs in a hospital, educational institution, or similar large, complex setting.
M-F daytime hours, 7:30 am – 4:30 pm, with some flexibility allowed after completing the probationary period. Additional work hours are required during evenings, nights and weekends to respond to institutional needs.
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
