Job Summary
At Salt Lake Community College, we believe our people make us great. Within our People and Workplace Culture team, this position, in collaboration with the Director, Benefits and HRIS and the Benefits team, will work closely with employees and supervisors regarding FML, ADA, other leaves and short and long-term disability. Under minimal supervision, utilize professional judgement to determine outcomes for complex high risk and high liability FMLA/ADA employee case outcomes. Collaborate with legal counsel and state risk on complex high risk and high liability FMLA/ADA cases. Consult with and advise supervisors and employees on cases specifically involving ADA and FMLA. This position will navigate complex ADA and medical leave situations while considering both the human element and the framework and standards of operation within the law. Draft and coordinate FMLA, Employee ADA, and other leave policies and guidance for the College. Monitor compliance and employment law changes on a regular basis and updates practices and policy accordingly.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of Federal and State HR statutes, laws, and regulations. In-depth knowledge of Family Leave (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and other employee leaves, with ability to appropriately apply standards and problem solving skills to reduce liability to the College. Knowledge of Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS). Knowledge of word processing, spread sheet, presentation, and report writing software. Business English, writing and vocabulary, business math. Ability to write effectively and concisely. Effective communication and human relations skills. Demonstrate advanced level of judgement, critical thinking skills, and discretion dealing with highly sensitive and confidential information. Demonstrate effective listening and empathic skills to understand the best ADA and leave outcome for employees and for the College. Ability to create and maintain a good working relationship with College departments, and internal staff. Ability to create understanding when working with individuals and groups as it pertains to leaves. Demonstrate high level of professional judgement to make decisions regarding complex high risk and high liability FMLA/ADA employee case outcomes. Ability to be self-directed, prioritize and align work with desired outcomes of the College. Ability to complete complex assignments that impact outcomes with minimal supervision. Ability to navigate complex interpersonal and medical leave situations while considering both the human element and the framework and standards of operation within the law. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Advisory & Case Management
- Serves as primary resource for FMLA, ADA, and leave-related inquiries
- Reviews requests, determines eligibility, and communicates outcomes
- Guides supervisors and employees through complex leave and accommodation processes
- Maintains ongoing communication with stakeholders throughout cases
Compliance & Risk Management
- Interprets federal and state regulations and institutional policy
- Collaborates with legal counsel and risk management on complex or high-liability cases
- Monitors regulatory updates and recommends policy or process changes
Documentation & Systems
- Maintains confidential files and case documentation in compliance with legal requirements
- Tracks leave requests, determinations, and outcomes using systems and reporting tools
- Prepares reports and metrics related to leave and accommodation activity
Training & Education
- Provides training and consultation to supervisors and staff regarding FMLA, ADA, and leave programs
- Develops resources and materials to increase institutional understanding of leave policies
Program Administration
- Coordinates accommodation implementation and follow-up
- Oversees leave program processes including medical, statutory, and institutional leaves
- Supports emergency and outbreak-related leave responses when applicable

- Knowledge of FMLA, ADA, HIPAA, and related employment regulations
- Ability to analyze complex situations and determine appropriate outcomes

Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field.
- Two (2) to four (4) years of full-time experience in human resources focused on Benefits and ADA/FML Leave.
- Trade off 2:1 in experience/education requirement. Part time experience may be substituted on a prorated basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Human Resources or related field.
- Employee Benefit experience.
- FML/ADA certification.
- HR Certification.
- Higher Education Experience
