Geneticist

The West Virginia University School of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics seeks a Geneticist qualified for appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or full Professor rank to join our growing division and program. The primary practice location is Morgantown, WV, with occasional travel to Summersville, WV and South Charleston, WV. Clinical care will also be delivered via direct-to-home video visits, as well as through our groundbreaking clinic-to-clinic telemedicine program, offering service to Martinsburg, Princeton, South Charleston, Summersville, Vienna, and Wheeling, WV.

Duties: The successful candidate will join our growing group which includes two other geneticists, three advanced practice providers, and three genetic counselors. He or she will practice pediatric and adult genetics with the assistance of additional supportive personnel. Clinical responsibilities will include patients of all ages with duties that entail a mix of inpatient consults, telemedicine, and clinic. In addition to providing excellent patient care, the successful candidate will also be actively involved in the teaching of medical students and residents.

Qualifications: Applicants must have an MD or DO degree or foreign equivalent and be eligible to obtain a state medical license. Candidates must have completed an accredited genetics residency, and be board certified in medical genetics. Additional interest or training in the care of metabolic patients is preferred. For appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank, a demonstrated track-record of leadership, excellent communication skills, and publications in high-impact journals are required. All qualifications must be met by the time of appointment.

Our genetics division is the administrative home of an annual grant from the state of West Virginia funding medical directorship of the state newborn screening lab. Our new 150 bed Children’s Hospital has a full suite of pediatric operating rooms, cardiac catheterization lab/interventional radiology, and GI-endoscopy with dedicated pediatric anesthesia staff. The hospital includes 34 pediatric beds, 54 NICU beds, 26 PICU beds, Heart Center, and a dedicated Cancer Center. WVU Medicine Children’s is a Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center, with plans to become Level 1, as it is for adults currently. There is also a Birthing Center including a 30-bed obstetrical unit and maternal-fetal medicine clinic. J. W. Ruby Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in West Virginia with a pediatric cardiac surgery program, the only epilepsy monitoring unit in the state equipped to serve children, and the only hospital in the state to receive Magnet status for nursing excellence.

The West Virginia University Health System is West Virginia’s largest health system and the state’s largest employer. The System has undergone significant expansion in specialty and sub-specialty care in areas such as cancer, heart and vascular, and neuroscience, among many others. The Health System operates West Virginia’s first and only multi-organ transplant center, and opened a new, 150-bed Children’s Hospital in September 2022. Today, the WVU Health System has more than 2,400 licensed beds, 3,900 providers, and nearly 30,000 employees. Anchored by a 700-bed academic medical center in Morgantown, the Health System includes more than 20 member hospitals that collectively serve a multi-state region that includes West Virginia, Western Maryland, Eastern Ohio, and Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Morgantown is consistently rated as one of the best small metropolitan areas in the country for both lifestyle and business climate. The area offers the cultural diversity and amenities of a large city in a safe, family-friendly environment. There is also an excellent school system and an abundance of beautiful homes and recreational activities. Morgantown is located just over an hour south of Pittsburgh, PA and three hours from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD.

Depending on operational needs, a successful candidate may also be assigned to provide services and outreach clinics, telemedicine clinics, and consults to other healthcare facilities at additional worksites in West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. In such instances, travel would be anticipated and expected to fulfill said duties at these additional sites.
