Job Description:

Summary:

The Center for Student Belonging (CSB) seeks a collaborative and highly organized graduate student to serve as Graduate Coordinator supporting the Summer Transition Enrichment Program (STEP), District Scholars, and First-Generation initiatives.

This role spans a full-time summer appointment and a part-time academic-year appointment to ensure continuity of student support, program execution, and student success initiatives. The Graduate Coordinator plays a central role in program coordination, student leadership supervision, and individualized student support for historically underrepresented and first-generation students. This position reports to the Assistant/Associate Director for Student Belonging.

Essential Functions:

  1. Summer Appointment – STEP Program (June 22, 2026 – August 10, 2026)
    • Coordinate program logistics, curriculum support, workshops, and events.
    • Supervise and mentor undergraduate STEP Student Coordinators (STUCOs).
    • Track student participation and maintain accurate program records.
    • Provide one-on-one student support and follow-up interventions.
    • Serve as a key contact during program delivery, including evenings and critical program moments (move-in, orientation, assessments).
    • Collaborate with campus partners to deliver inclusive, high-impact programming.
  2. Academic-Year Appointment – District Scholars & First-Generation Support (Fall 2025 – Spring 2026)
    • Support daily operations and logistics of STEP, District Scholars, and First-Generation initiatives.
    • Track student engagement and maintain program documentation.
    • Provide individualized student support and academic success interventions.
    • Assist with event planning, promotion, and execution.
    • Contribute to signature initiatives such as National First-Generation Celebration Week.
  3. Program Coordination & Operations
    • Manage event logistics (space reservations, vendors, materials, technology).
    • Oversee on-site program execution.
    • Maintain supply inventory and prepare event spaces.
  4. Student Support & Supervision
    • Provide mentorship and leadership development for student staff.
    • Meet one-on-one with students to support academic and belonging outcomes.
    • Share supervision of undergraduate student leaders.
  5. Communication & Outreach
    • Support multi-platform communication (email, website, social media).
    • Serve as liaison with campus partners, vendors, and stakeholders.
    • Assist with outreach to students and families.
  6. Assessment & Reporting
    • Administer evaluations and collect feedback.
    • Compile program reports and summaries.
    • Support continuous improvement through data tracking.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution.
  • Ability to manage stress, problem-solve effectively, and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to set boundaries while providing strong student support.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace; willingness to learn systems such as EMS and Engage.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Part-time.
  • 20 - 35 hours per week.

Salary Range:

  • $18.95 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Current full-time graduate student at American University.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with, or willingness to learn, AU platforms for planning, organizing, and promoting CSB signature events.
  • Strong attention to detail for maintaining accurate records, tracking student participation, and supporting students through one-on-one guidance.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience mentoring or supervising undergraduate students.
  • Experience working with first-year or first-generation students.
  • Familiarity with AU systems (or willingness to learn).

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  1. Summer Employment Terms
    • Dates of Employment: June 22, 2026 – August 10, 2026.
    • 35 hours per week (in-person).
    • Benefits include: Single-bedroom summer housing, meals during onboarding and program days, and a metro pass for STEP outings.
  2. Academic Year Employment Terms
    • Dates: Fall 2026 – Spring 2027.
    • Up to 20 hours per week (in-person).
    • No housing or meal benefits provided during the academic year.
  3. Work Expectations
    • Availability during CORE days (Wed/Thurs/Fri, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.) during the academic year.
    • Flexibility for evenings and weekends, especially during summer programming.
    • Ability to work extended hours during peak program periods.
