The Carnegie Mellon University Children’s School is part of the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences' Department of Psychology and is one of the most popular programs in the Pittsburgh area. The Children's School is a laboratory school that is actively involved in preschool and kindergarten education, developmental research, undergraduate teaching and training of both pre-service and practicing educators. Educators model best practices for early childhood education by designing thematic curriculum for active exploration and equipping parents to extend children’s learning at home.

We are seeking a part-time educational administrator to join our staff!

Under the supervision of the Director, the Educational Administrator plans for and coordinates the oversight and implementation of the School calendar, programs, policies, procedures and family engagement in accordance with the philosophy of the Children’s School, the PA Department of Education and NAEYC Guidelines. Mentors and supports the Teachers, student employees and high school interns. Serves as a liaison with the Psychology department and University resources regarding facilities, accounting, insurance and EH & S practices. Coordinates marketing and fund-raising efforts, school enrollment and services provided by local school districts.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Educational leadership – Ensures effective School operations in the areas of educational planning and implementation, staffing, student needs, family engagement and facilities management.  Collaborates with Teachers, Associate Teachers, and Directors to ensure that the School’s curriculum and programs align with the School’s mission and philosophy.  Coordinates the admissions and re-enrollment processes, reviews scholarship application and recommends decisions.
  • Assures appropriate staffing for Associate Teacher and Teacher positions, including arranging for substitutes as needed.  Schedules and monitor duty rotations for Teaching and Student positions.  Serves as backup for Administrative Coordinator for research activities. 
  • Serves as a resource for teachers and children with special needs.  Assists parents in advocating for their children, and coordinates communications with therapists and agencies for orientation, guidance and assessment.  Develops a resource list including doctors, psychologists, special services agencies, etc. 
  • Assures family engagement through the coordination of family volunteer committees and activities. Serves as a family-oriented resource for parents who are newcomers to Pittsburgh.  Coordinates special classroom and parent events. 
  • Manages the resolution of facilities maintenance issues and coordinates for capital and safety improvements according to NAEYC standards. 
  • Compliance – Collaborates with the School Director on NAEYC accreditation and on PA Compliance issues.  Serves as “Education Director” re: PA Private Academic School Licensing. Maintains the NAEYC program portfolio.  Schedules, implements and records fire safety and lockdown drills.  Schedules and facilitates fire safety, first aid and CPR training for Staff positions.  Maintains the School’s safety and sanitation standards. 
  • Staff Oversight – Recruits, hires and schedules student employees.   Coordinates for the placement of High School apprentices with High School officials and Children’s School teaching staff.  Reviews performance evaluations for Field Placement/Pre- Service Teaching/Practicum Interns. Integrates student scheduling into the staffing plan for the School. 
  • Coordinates for the training of new Staff Teaching employees.  Updates Support Staff handbook as needed. 
  • Public Relations – Proposes new funding sources and strategies for the School and its programs.  Organizes School fundraisers and manages order, receipt and inventory of items and payments.
  • Organizes Public Relations events to promote the School and recruit new parents and students.  Schedules parent tours and manages Open House events. 
  • Manages the EITC, OSTC and other funding programs and related reporting. 
  • Financial management and reconciliation - Manages billing and or collection of income (tuition, extended programs, camps) and payment of expenses.  Responsible for account reconciliations, banking, records management and document maintenance.  Creates financial reports and budgets for Director review and approval.  Orders supplies for Teachers and the School.  Serves as the liaison to the University Contracts Office as needed. 
  • Professional Development – Engages in professional development activities re:  child development and early childhood education including meetings, seminars and training events and conferences.

Qualifications:

  • Education:  Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education
  • Experience: 5-8 years of early childhood teaching experience

Requirements:

  • Successful background check, including Act 153 Child Protection Clearances
