Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) announces an opportunity to work as a full-time, tenure-track History/Political Science faculty member.

The History/Political Science Department at LTCC provides key general education courses to all students pursuing a degree at LTCC. The department offers courses online, face-to-face, and in the Rising Scholars Program. The successful candidate will be qualified and willing to teach in each of these modalities, but primarily face-to-face.

It is the mission of the Lake Tahoe Community College History/Political Science department to serve foundational skills, degree seeking, transfer, and community students with an extensive curriculum in history and political science. The program is dedicated to helping students become independent, civically-minded, and active citizens in their local, state, and international communities. The department fosters the values of diversity, equity ,and inclusion as well as rigorous investigation, open-mindedness, collaboration, self-understanding, and respect for knowledge.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

After review, applicants judged most suitable for the position will be invited to initial interviews. These applicants will be notified by phone on or about Wednesday, March 18, 2026. Initial interviews will be conducted by a committee of campus constituents and are tentatively scheduled for April 9 and 10, 2026.

Finalists will then be invited to a secondary process on May 6 and 7, 2026. Travel allowances and district-provided lodging will be provided to qualifying applicants. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an interview.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

  • Salary Range: LTCC offers a competitive compensation package that includes a starting placement salary of $66,053 to $89,310 annually for faculty who hold a master’s degree or equivalent, dependent upon teaching and work experience, or starting placement salary of $83,229 to $103,579 annually for faculty who hold a doctoral degree, dependent upon teaching and work experience.   • Benefits: Health and Welfare benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and long term disability. These benefits also include full coverage of a gold-level medical plan which, on average, covers 80% of healthcare expenses for a standard population. LTCC also matches 19.1% of an eligible employee’s salary and contributes it into a CalSTRS pension account for qualifying employees.

This position is a 177-day contract over fall, winter, and spring quarters. This position is exempt from overtime compensation. 10 days of sick leave accrue annually.

Definition:The History/Political Science disciplines are part of the Society, Culture, and Education Meta Major at LTCC. Meta Majors are a key aspect of the Guided Pathways initiative at LTCC which includes improving student experience by designing clear degree pathways for students. As mentioned, the History/Political Science department serves all students at LTCC by providing courses in key general education (GE) areas and courses within the LTCC transfer degree in Political Science.

Representative Duties:

  • Teach assigned courses in the History and Political Science curriculum. Courses may vary by modality: online, face-to-face, correspondence, and enhanced virtual education (EVE). There is a requirement of at least half of faculty course load to be face-to-face instruction in each primary term. This is an on-campus, face-to-face position.
  • The History/Political Science Department will include one full-time faculty member and several part-time faculty members. This position – as the full-time faculty member – will serve as department lead by:
    1. Developing curriculum and maintaining a comprehensive instructional program in the History/Political Science department;
    2. Developing, maintaining, and assessing student learning outcomes for appropriate courses;
    3. Developing departmental budget and class schedules in collaboration with the instructional dean;
    4. Selecting textbooks and course materials (including Open Education Resources); and
    5. Assisting with the selection and coordination of adjunct faculty in the department as needed.
  • Participate in full-time faculty responsibilities including faculty and departmental meetings, departmental planning, community liaison, curriculum development, and committee assignments.
  • Observe, support, and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District.
  • Refer students to appropriate college resources for information on counseling and other student services.
  • Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice, and/or bias.
  • Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of everyone.
  • Develop, maintain, and assess student learning outcomes for appropriate courses; participate in and potentially oversee the use of assessments for ongoing improvement.
  • Develop and revise curriculum and maintain a comprehensive instructional program in the History and Political Science department.
  • Serve as the campus-wide lead on Civic Engagement projects as assigned and prioritized by college leadership.
  • Build interest in and support the successful completion of the Political Science Transfer Degree.
  • Consult and collaborate with appropriate college faculty.

The successful candidate will have:

  • The ability to utilize culturally responsive teaching and pedagogy to support students and incorporate innovative teaching practices, including participatory and critical thinking methodologies.
  • Familiarity with characteristics of community college students
  • An ability to teach multiple subject areas
  • An understanding of small college environment
  • Interest in and ability to incorporate technology in the teaching/learning process
  • An ability to work independently
  • An ability and desire to foster student civic engagement across campus

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

As this position covers two areas of discipline, the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges, Title V Regulations, requires that the successful candidate must demonstrate that they satisfy minimum qualifications for both History and Political Science.Possess the degrees in one of the following options:

  • Master’s (or higher) in history AND a Bachelor’s (or higher) in political science, government, or international relations;
  • Master’s (or higher) in political science AND a Bachelor’s in history;
  • Master’s (or higher) in humanities, geography, area studies, women’s studies, social science, or ethnic studies AND a Master’s (or higher) in government or international relations AND a Bachelor’s in history;
  • Master’s (or higher) in history AND a Master’s (or higher) in economics, public administration, sociology, or a Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.) or Legum Baccalaureus (LL.B.) ANDa Bachelor’s political science, government, or international relations;
  • Master’s (or higher) in social science or ethnic studies AND a Bachelor’s in history AND a Bachelor’s in political science, government, or international relations;
  • Master’s (or higher) in humanities, geography, area studies, or women’s studies AND a Master’s (or higher) in economics, public administration, sociology, or a Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.) or Legum Baccalaureus (LL.B.) AND a Bachelor’s in history ANDa Bachelor’s political science, government, or international relations;
  • Or the equivalent.
