Instructional Professor (Open Rank) in Spanish

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures invites applications for a position as an Instructional Professor (open rank) in Spanish with an expected start date of September 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Instructional Professor, Associate Instructional Professor, or Instructional Professor, depending on qualifications and educational background. The initial appointment is for a minimum of 2 years, with longer initial terms possible depending on qualifications and initial rank. Review and progression schedule are determined by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union.

Responsibilities include both teaching and service duties. Teaching normally consists of seven courses across three quarters at all levels of the Spanish language. One language course may periodically be replaced by a non-language course in an area of Spanish culture or a course related to language pedagogy. Service duties related to the Spanish language program may include advising undergraduate theses, creating and overseeing placement exams and graduate language exams, teaching independent studies, mentoring graduate students and new instructors, or other Spanish program-specific duties. The position also includes service, such as co-curricular activities and outreach. Instructional Professors of all ranks are required to engage in regular professional development.

Applicants must have previous experience teaching Spanish at the post-secondary level and must demonstrate sufficient language proficiency for teaching Spanish in a university context, e.g., through an ACTFL-certified result at the Superior level or higher, or through receipt of an advanced degree earned in a Spanish-language context. An MA in a field related to Spanish is required, a PhD is preferred. Candidates with specialized training in second language acquisition, second language pedagogy, and/or assessment are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants must upload the following materials to the University of Chicago’s recruitment website at apply.interfolio.com/177699 by 10:59 PM Central Time/11:59 PM Eastern Time on December 15, 2025:

  • CV
  • Cover letter (in English and Spanish)
  • Teaching statement (in English and Spanish)
  • A 15–20-minute video of a remote or in-person Spanish language or culture class (if no recording of the candidate’s teaching is available, a mock-class video is also acceptable). Please upload teaching video/mock-class video to a video hosting platform and provide a link contained within a Word or PDF document
  • Detailed lesson plan for recording of remote or in-person Spanish language or culture class (or mock-class, if no recording of candidate's teaching is available)
  • Contact information for three references

Optional documents:

  • Student teaching evaluations (if available)

Applicants may be asked to provide additional materials following the initial review of applications. Questions may be directed to Callie Manick at cpbrown@uchicago.edu.

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union. This position is contingent upon budgetary approval.
