About TCNJ

The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) is a highly selective institution that is consistently recognized as one of the top comprehensive colleges in the nation. Founded in 1855 as the New Jersey State Normal School, TCNJ maintains the eighth highest four-year graduation rate among all public colleges and universities. It is ranked by Money as one of the top 15 public colleges “most likely to pay off financially,” and U.S. News & World Report rates it the No. 1 public institution among regional universities in the northeast.

Position Overview:

The College of New Jersey's Pre-College Summer Program (PCSP) is seeking energetic and dedicated Instructional Support Specialists for Summer 2026. PCSP is a 10-day, 9-night inclusive residential experience designed for New Jersey high school students (ages 16–21) with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Participants live and learn on campus while engaging in academic, social, and career-focused experiences that prepare them for college life, employment, and greater independence. Instructional Support Specialists play a vital role in supporting students' academic, social, and personal growth throughout the summer program. Working closely with instructors and other program staff, they help create a welcoming and engaging classroom and campus environment that encourages learning, inclusion, and confidence.

Please note: This program is supported through federal funding. Program continuation and all associated staff positions are contingent upon the availability of these funds. In the event that funding is reduced or withdrawn, positions may be modified or rescinded.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist instructors in delivering adapted academic lessons and activities focused on literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking.
  • Support students individually and in small groups to enhance participation and comprehension.
  • Take detailed notes and assist with production of end-of-program reports.
  • Encourage positive peer interactions and model inclusive social behavior.
  • Help organize and implement classroom and campus-based activities.
  • Collaborate with program staff to ensure a consistent and student-centered experience.
  • Uphold the values of person-centered planning, self-determination, and community inclusion.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Experience working or volunteering with youths with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
  • Familiarity with transition planning, inclusive education, or pre-employment transition services (Pre-ETS).

Preferred:

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Enthusiasm for mentoring students in an inclusive college setting.

Persons with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations in order to perform the essential functions of the position. If the requested accommodation(s) cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, the applicant may not be eligible for the position.

Employer Qualifications

Employment at TCNJ is contingent upon the successful completion of an applicable background check, reference checks, and verification of identity and authorization to work in the United States (Form I-9).

Accommodation: Applicants who require a reasonable accommodation to apply or interview should contact hr@tcnj.edu.

How to Apply

Qualified candidates should apply online and submit a letter of interest, resume, as well as the names and contact information for three professional references. Applications will be considered until a viable finalist has been found.

The College is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive campus community that respects and uplifts individuals from all backgrounds. We value the varied perspectives, experiences, and talents of all members of our community and strive to create an environment where everyone has equitable access to opportunities for success. As an equal opportunity employer, we comply with all applicable federal and state laws regarding nondiscrimination and affirmative action. We encourage applications from individuals whose lived experiences and professional interests align with our institutional mission of academic excellence, access, and integrity.
