Instructional Support Specialist, Theater

Under the supervision of an administrator and guidance of faculty, coordinates, facilitates, and performs a variety of technical functions and activities in the operation of the theater, including but not limited to the use of the scene shops and the performing arts facility by students, faculty, and the community; maintains, repairs, and improves the theater and related equipment; collaborates with various artists, technicians, and performers during the day-to-day activities and special projects related to the area of assignment.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepares sets and equipment to support instruction in Performing Arts courses; prepares for and assists with class demonstrations. *
  • Assists the Technical Director and/or House Manager with events in the theater; serves as primary contact in absence of Director/Manager. *
  • Assists with supervision, training, and scheduling of student stage technicians and crews. *
  • Assists with and facilitates all elements of the construction of Theater Arts department scenic designs, including but not limited to construction, interpreting technical drawings, painting, rigging, and the supervision of student set crews. *
  • Assists with and facilitates all elements of Theater Arts department lighting designs, including but not limited to interpreting technical drawings, planning and execution of light plots, and supervision of student lighting crews. *
  • Attends and participates in production meetings; collaborates with technical director and other members of design team; partners with design team to create and facilitate specialty stage props for productions and paints scenes as needed. *
  • Operates power tools for faculty, staff, and students when needed for special projects and assignments. *
  • Serves on the running crew for Theater Arts department productions; maintains and repairs scenic and stage properties for Theater Arts department productions. *
  • Coordinates and partners with outside sound engineers and vendors related to technical needs for theatrical, musical, and/or special events held in the theater. *
  • Serves as a sound engineer for Theater Arts department productions. *
  • Partners with administrators, instructors, students, performers, and other parties in coordinating theater utilization; including but not limited to reserving the venue, updating and maintaining the theater calendar; following up after reservation confirmations but prior to the scheduled event to ensure continuity of communication and identified needs; provides assistance prior to, during, and after scheduled event(s). *
  • Collaborates with college departments, on-and-off campus artists, technicians, and performers. *
  • Tracks and maintains department inventory; identifies needs and provides or arranges for equipment, manual, hand, and power tool repairs; reviews inventory and recommends purchases to replenish or restock department supplies. *
  • Ensures proper storing of equipment, materials, and supplies in accordance with safety standards. *
  • Performs or arranges routine maintenance on all sound and lighting equipment, tools, and supplies. *
  • Assists in updating policies and procedures to ensure safety, planning, and training related to performing arts. *
  • Coordinates with music department instructors to meet specific needs of each production or special event, including but not limited to the use of risers, acoustical shells, music stands, and basic sound reinforcement. *
  • Assists with the activities involved in moving musical equipment or instruments to outside venues for music department productions, performances, or events. *
  • May provide and coordinate work direction, training, scheduling, and activities of student workers, student assistants, short-term, temporary staff, and volunteer assistants; reviews, verifies, and submits hourly timesheets to area administrator for approval. *
  • May participate in and serve on a variety of college and/or department meetings or committees.
  • Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate degree with coursework in technical theater, stage technology, stage management, and theory of set construction, lighting, and design, or related discipline; AND
  • Two (2) years of technical stagecraft or related experience;
  • OR
  • Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with the operation of stage equipment including lighting, rigging, and set construction.
  • Experience interpreting paperwork pertaining to lighting design including light plots.
  • Experience executing stage-set designs from floor plans, elevations, and construction drawings.
  • Experience with operation of sound equipment including microphones, amplifiers, and loudspeakers.
  • Demonstrated commitment to community college education.

General functions, policies, rules, and regulations of a community college. Applicable codes, regulations, policies, procedures, and laws. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Record keeping, record, and file retrieval, filing and file sharing methods and techniques. Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Effective communication, both verbal and written. Correct English usage, grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and spelling. Technical theater services to support events, productions, or performances, such as drama, dance, opera, concerts, and lectures. Aesthetic considerations related to the area of assignment. Materials, equipment, and techniques used in theatrical performances. All equipment and materials used in the performing arts department. Set design and construction including carpentry, welding, and scenic painting. Safety rules and regulations pertaining to the area of assignment. Operation and maintenance of all theater, lighting, sound, and related electronic equipment. Techniques, tools, materials, and equipment used to produce set properties. Stagecraft and stage operations associated with scenic design. Stage equipment utilized in assigned activities. Drafting, computer aided design, computer modeling, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Painter. Backstage operations coordination. Electrical control systems and related components. Related safety regulations and practices. Inventory methods and techniques. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies. Operation of computers, software programs and applications, and hardware peripherals used in the area of assignment. Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

Ability to: Independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position. Plan, coordinate, organize, and prioritize workload to meet timelines. Coordinate flow of communications and information as needed. Generate and prepare comprehensive reports related to the area of assignment. Compose effective correspondence. Plan, coordinate, and implement stage design, lighting, and sound requirements. Prepare, install, and operate lighting and sound systems according to design specifications. Design, assemble, and dismantle stage sets and produce props. Maintain and operate stage equipment and tools; use and maintain power tools and equipment. Work and collaborate with various artists, technicians, and performers. Organize, schedule and control workflow related to the area of assignment. Update and maintain an inventory of existing and newly acquired materials and equipment. Communicate effectively with students, college employees, and the public using tact, patience, and courtesy both verbally and in written form. Use appropriate and correct English, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. Successfully apply office policies, procedures, rules, and regulations to the area of assignment. Learn new equipment and software programs and application processes. Use and adapt to different software programs and applications and their uses; consistently learn new equipment and software procedures. Perform calculations with speed and accuracy. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective and appropriate course of action. Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive and complex issues and situations. Handle and/or refer difficult or uncomfortable situations with students, faculty, and staff related to technology resources to appropriate supervisor. Identify and refer ethical or legal concerns to appropriate supervisor. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others during the course of work.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: May be required to possess or demonstrate an ability to obtain a valid driver’s license, if driving is required as an essential responsibility of the position. May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, workshops, and/or events in support of the overall objective of the position. Training for lift and other specific equipment may be required.
