Substitute – Theater Technical Specialist
Job Description
The Substitute – Theater Technical Specialist provides technical, logistics, and instruction support to theater production and coursework by overseeing and performing technical aspects, set construction and moving, lighting, sound, special effects, and other services that support staging of theatrical productions.
Under general supervision, substitute employees perform a variety of work in support of a college or district program or office. Non-academic, non-classified substitute employees are appointed temporarily when recruiting to fill a permanent position or to replace classified employees who are temporarily absent from duty. They are not part of classified service, are at-will employees, and have no entitlement rights to any position in the District. Substitute employment shall not result in the displacement of Classified personnel.
Substitute non-classified employees appointed temporarily while recruiting for a permanent position may not exceed 130 working days within a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Those temporarily replacing a classified employee may not exceed 160 working days within a fiscal year. Retired CalPERS Annuitants may not exceed 960 hours in a fiscal year.
Representative Duties:
- Oversees, coordinates, and arranges the staging of theatrical lighting, sound, video and other equipment for performances. Collaborates on production needs for plays and events, including sound and lighting requirements.
- Constructs stage scenery, prepares working drawings and floor plans, positions scenery for optimal lighting and sound effects, and writes lighting cues.
- Provides on-site technical staging expertise at events, offering guidance on staging concepts, processes, and techniques.
- Designs scenery and lighting for theater productions and other events.
- Performs other related duties as assigned that support the position objectives. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures, including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.

Education and Experience: Requires an Associate’s degree in a theater-related discipline and five years of experience providing technical support to theater productions. A Bachelor’s degree in theater-related arts is preferred. Or, any combination of education and experience providing equivalent qualifications.
Licenses and Certificates: Requires a valid California driver license.
Work Conditions: Work is performed indoors where safety considerations exist from physical labor and working with electricity and power tools.
Conditions of Employment:
Employment is contingent upon verification of employment history, background check, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Short-term/temporary assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked. Regular attendance is essential. The person holding this position is a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with Coast Community College District policies and Title IX.
