Essential Job Duties:
The Instructor and Training Specialist is responsible for implementing the "E" of ITRE - Education. You will develop, direct, and instruct online and live courses to expand the training brand of ITRE as it relates to the Fundamental Engineering Principles (FEP) program, Highway Engineering Concepts (HEC) course, Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam review course, Professional Engineering (PE) exam review course, and Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) courses. This includes teaching classes not only to NCDOT employees, but also to private sector employees at the state and national level, as well as national DOTs.

In this role, you'll translate complex engineering concepts into clear, engaging learning experiences that support engineers and engineering technicians at every stage of their careers. You'll design and deliver high-quality live and online instruction that builds confidence, strengthens foundational knowledge, and supports real-world application.

You'll serve as both an educator and collaborator, leading courses, refining curriculum, and adapting content for broad audiences across public agencies and the private sector. Through instruction and outreach, you'll build and sustain professional networks that connect engineers, agencies, and industry partners at the state and national level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruct, assess, and support FEP and HEC courses, including grading, curriculum design, and development of assessment tools.
  • Assist in the design and delivery of in-person and Canvas-based online courses for FE and PE exam review programs.
  • Collaborate with NCDOT, state and municipal agencies, and private-sector engineering partners to develop and evaluate innovative, pedagogically sound approaches to teaching complex technical content.
  • Build and maintain collaborative networks of current and former students, instructors, and staff across ITRE to support a team-oriented learning environment.
  • Support the transition of course materials across platforms, media formats, and learning management systems.
  • Contribute to outreach efforts through presentations, workshops, online discussions, and participation in conferences.

This role is well suited for someone who enjoys teaching, presenting, and relationship-building, and who is motivated by meaningful engagement and seeing learners succeed. If you are interested in your work having an impact beyond the classroom, we encourage you to apply.

Other Work/Responsibilities:
In addition to the core responsibilities of this role, there may be occasional opportunities to take on additional duties such as, pending project work and/or classroom teachings.

Minimum Experience/Education:
Requires post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience in construction, transportation, or a related engineering discipline may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills (including public speaking) in written and spoken English.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate a high level of initiative and ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to make presentations utilizing good communication and facilitation skills.
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and related Google applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Training and Education or Civil Engineering plus three years of transportation engineering and/or training and education experience.
  • Hands-on experience in the transportation field.
  • Professional Engineering license, or the ability to obtain this license preferred.

Required License or Certification:
A valid North Carolina driver's license must be maintained throughout employment and/or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start date.
