Position Highlights
The Department of East Asian Studies in the College of Humanities at the University of Arizona invites applications for an Instructor in Japanese Language starting August 18, 2025. The selected candidate will teach modern Japanese language classes, depending on department needs. It is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal depending on quality of performance and availability of funding. Applications will be reviewed starting August 1, 2025. The Department of East Asian Studies offers Bachelor of Arts degrees and offers programs leading to Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in East Asian Studies, Chinese (modern history, religion and thought, literature, and linguistics) and Japanese (linguistics, literature, and religion). This career-track appointment is not eligible for tenure. Duties & Responsibilities
- Teaching up to four modern Japanese language classes at all levels per semester based on department needs.
- Working collaboratively to further the development of the Japanese language program.
- Holding office hours.
- Developing and preparing teaching materials independently and collaboratively.
- Attending meetings and/or events as requested.
- Actively recruiting Japanese majors and minors.
- Actively recruiting students to departmental courses in Japanese.
- Additional duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Japanese Linguistics, Japanese Pedagogy, or related field by August 2025.
- Native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English is required.
- A minimum of three years teaching experience and a record of excellence in teaching at colleges in the US.
Preferred Qualifications
An excellent command of digital/online resources and experience of utilizing them for teaching the language.
