Position Description

DEFINITION:The role of the EMS Instructor is to provide knowledge in his/her field of expertise and to promote various student-centered learning activities that will stimulate an interest in critical thinking and a desire for life-long learning. Various teaching strategies, learning styles and delivery methods including new technology systems will be utilized to reach this goal. The FT EMS Instructor (CE) is responsible for the planning, programming, instruction and evaluation of the continuing education program offerings.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives general supervision from the Director of EMS Programs.
  • Exercises oversight of PT EMT & Paramedic Instructors

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

  • Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities
  • Develop and prepare supplement materials to enhance textbook lessons
  • Collaborate with the EMS Director to select textbook and learning resources for the students and faculty
  • Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores
  • Provide classroom demonstrations and develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance
  • Assist the Department Chair with class and program schedules
  • Maintain and submit all required records in a neat, accurate and timely fashion, including but not limited to class rosters, registration forms, pay sheets, attendance forms and grade rosters
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of instructional supplies for all the program’s classes
  • Serve as an academic advisor for EMS Program
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines
  • Makes recommendations for program/curriculum changes
  • Program Outcome Assessment

Other Important Functions:

  • Assess the relevance and impact of various lessons and recommend improvements as needed
  • Oversee and participate in field studies and assignments; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Act as an advisor and counselor to students; provide individual tutoring to students outside of the classroom as needed; participate in student recruitment efforts
  • Assist the EMS Director to ensure compliance with accreditation standards for EMS Educational Programs as set by the Committee on Accreditation of Education Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMPS).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures, to include instruction in a virtual environment
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional techniques and procedures.
  • Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment
  • Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration

Ability To:

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully, both verbally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Minimum Education/Training:Associates Degree from a regionally accredited institution in a related field of study required.

Minimum Experience:

  • At least 2 FT years of experience (or any combination of PT experience that equals two FT years) in an instructional setting as an instructor, and with course development
  • 8 years of specific industry work as an EMT and/or Paramedic
  • Credentialing as a NC Level I Paramedic Instructor required.

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a closely related field.
  • 3 year’s experience working with the Committee on Accreditation of Education Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMPS)
  • At least 5 years of experience in an instructional setting as an instructor, and with course development
  • At least 10 years of specific industry experience as an EMT and/or Paramedic.
  • Instructor certifications in BCLS, ACLS, PHTLS, and PALS are preferred.

This position requires teaching a teaching or administrative schedule that may include day, evening and weekends.

Successful candidates are required to submit official transcripts for all degrees obtained, prior to the official date of hire. If the highest level of education is a High School diploma or equivalent, proof of completion is required.

Successful candidates who have obtained their education outside of the US and its territories must have their academic degree(s) validated, at their own expense, by an outside credential evaluation service as equivalent to the Baccalaureate or Master’s degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States.
