This role is expected to work onsite at Children's Hospital Colorado - Colorado Springs Campus.
Job Summary:
Pediatric Instructors of Clinical Practice are Clinical Faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine that will work in the Children's Hospital Colorado - Colorado Springs Emergency Department. In this role, they will provide medical care to acutely ill and injured pediatric patients. They will perform history taking, physical examinations, define and execute appropriate workup that leads to diagnosis with treatment and disposition plan.
100% Clinical Effort
Expected to maintain 1.0 cFTE (clinical effort). Clinical Practitioners at 1.0 cFTE will be expected to provide coverage for 1,376 clinical hours per year. All clinical hours obligations are negotiable with the Section Head at any time. This coverage will consist of Children's Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs location. Coverage will include:
- Pediatric Emergency care
- Pediatric Observation Unit medicine
- Jeopardy shifts (an internal physician coverage system for unanticipated absence)
- Practitioner must maintain active medical staff privileges at all Children's Hospital of Colorado and Children's Hospital of Colorado - Colorado Springs Emergency Departments unless a site is specifically excluded by mutual agreement of the practitioner and the Section Head or Colorado Springs ED Medical Director.
- Expected to attend at least 75% of the monthly joint section and Colorado Springs administrative meetings.
- Participate in Children's Hospital Colorado Main or Colorado Springs or with anesthesiology one time per year to maintain airway skills as well as other technical seminars as deemed by the section and/or practice site in conjunction with input from the medical director.
- Clinical teaching of Medical Students, Family Practice Residents, and other learners
- Clinical Supervision and support for Advanced Practice Providers
- Participation in Quality Improvement and development of Clinical Care Guidelines
- Maintenance of skills required for provision of high quality, patient centered, safe urgent/emergent care of children. Annual requirements include but may not be limited to:
- One high fidelity code simulation at the Simulation Center at CHCO-COS
- Maintenance of PALS certification
- Maintenance of ATLS certification
- Maintenance of CME relevant to clinical work
- Attend other technical seminars as deemed mandatory by the Section Head or Colorado Springs ED Medical Director

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications by date of hire.
- Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree
- Completed an accredited residency in Pediatrics or combined Medicine-Pediatrics
- Board Certified or eligible in Pediatrics
- Active certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support
- Active Colorado Medical License
- Active Colorado State DEA license
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two or more years' experience in pediatric acute care
- Experience teaching medical students and residents
- POCUS trained
- Experience with pediatric patient population; pediatric emergency, critical care or urgent care exposure ideal
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge:
- Advanced understanding of pediatric disease and injuries
- Understanding of a familiarity with resources to assist making clinical decisions and diagnosis
Skills:
- Use of electronic medical record (EPIC)
- Teaching of medical learners
Technical skills:
- Initial interpretation of plain radiographs
- Laceration repair
- Minor Incision and drainage
- Nerve blocks
- Foreign body removal
- Reduction of minor digit fractures of joint dislocations
- Acute respiratory care
- ECG interpretation
- Medical Screening Exams
Abilities:
- Work efficiently in a fast-paced, acute care environment for 8-10 hours at a time
- Ability to handle stressful situation with professional composure
- Promote teamwork amongst providers, nurses, techs, learners, and other colleagues
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge and skill in customer service delivery
- Well organized and efficient
- Skill in prioritizing patient and system needs
- Knowledge of quality improvement, family centered care, and evidenced-based practice
- Work a mix of days, evenings, weekends, and possibly overnight shifts
Condition of Employment:
- Must successfully pass a 10-panel drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado
- Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal and sex-offender background check

Anticipated Salary Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:
1.0 FTE at $189,000 to $250,000.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
