Junior Research Scientist/Assistant Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Associate

The Family Translational Research Group (FTRG) at New York University is looking for a talented, hard-working person with an interest in applying their exceptional data management and analytic skills to research aimed at understanding and preventing family maltreatment and improving the lives of families. FTRG conducts clinical psychology research on topics ranging from defining maltreatment in ways that can be reliably used by field workers, to determining how teen and adult couples’ conflict dynamics relate to violence, to examining the effects of family violence on children’s psychological and physical functioning, to furthering our understanding of risk and protective factors for child maltreatment and partner abuse. In addition to this basic research, FTRG is involved in large community-based prevention efforts in both military and civilian populations. These studies use the full spectrum of research methods, from intensive observational tools to epidemiological surveys to intervention science. The FTRG typically has about 8-10 active federally-funded projects. The group includes several Ph.D. level psychologists, masters level researchers and counselors, and bachelor level research staff. The FTRG is co-directed by Dr. Amy M. Smith Slep and Dr. Richard E. Heyman. For more information about our group, go to www.ftrgroup.org.

We are looking for a researcher with content area expertise, strong research methods background, and exceptional data analytic skills. We are particularly interested in candidates with strong experience in managing and manipulating complex data structures, Bayesian modeling, analyzing nested longitudinal data, and who are familiar with techniques for handling challenging data (e.g., highly non-normal distributions; missing data). People who join our team can expect great research experience, and, depending on skills and interests, opportunities for publications and grant writing. If you are excited by the possibility of applying state-of-the-science analytic models with complex data to innovative research on family maltreatment and related topics, and in a team environment, we hope you will consider joining us.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Data analysis and management.
  • Typically, staff are involved in several projects, managing volunteer research assistants, assisting with grant proposals, and writing reports for funders, and contributing to scientific papers. Those with advanced training are welcomed to lead scientific papers.
  • Coordinating and managing complex projects.

Skills

  • Strong data analytic experience in the following areas is preferred: advanced correlation and regression methods, structural equation modeling, growth curve models, and multilevel models. Expertise in methods for nonnormal data, intensive longitudinal analysis, power analysis, mixture models, causal inference, psychometrics, sequential and time series analysis, and/or analyzing large datasets are plusses.
  • Strong data management skills are required. This must include strong Excel skills. Proficiency in R is a plus.
  • Strong working knowledge of Mplus, in addition to at least one other general statistical package (e.g., SPSS, R, or SAS), is required.
  • Experience conducting research on families and/or prevention is required.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office applications is required.
  • Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.

Education Requirement:

  • Minimum B.A./B.S. in psychology, data science, statistics or related field
  • Ph.D preferred
