Junior Research Scientist (Salomon Center, Prof Schnabl & Prof Savov)

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated individual to work as a full-time research professional. The start date is subject to negotiation, but may be as early as July 1, 2026. The initial contract is for one year, with a potential extension for a second year upon mutual agreement.

This position is ideal for someone with a long-term interest in academic research who is planning to attend graduate school in economics, finance, or a related field. You will work with NYU Stern Professors Philipp Schnabl and Alexi Savov, who conduct research in financial intermediation, asset pricing, and macro-finance. Since many of the projects will involve extensive work with large, proprietary datasets, preference will be given to candidates with prior experience using statistical software such as Stata.

The position will be based in New York, and the successful candidate will be able to participate in the academic life at NYU, including attending research seminars and other departmental activities.

We have a successful placement record: of our four past research professionals, two are currently Ph.D. students in Finance at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, one is a Ph.D. student in Finance at the Wharton School, and one has graduated from the Ph.D. program in Economics at Harvard University.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $52,000–$65,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

The ideal candidate will:

  • have a strong quantitative background;
  • have strong computer skills, including programming (Stata, SAS, R, and/or Python are a plus);
  • be able to work independently to solve problems; and
  • have a long-term interest in pursuing research in finance and/or economics.

A background in economics is a plus but not required – we welcome candidates with strong technical backgrounds who are looking to gain more exposure to economics and finance.

To apply, please complete the application at Interfolio.

Please include the following information:

  • A cover letter describing:
    • Your interest in the position and your career goals
    • The date you are able to start work
    • Your familiarity with Stata and other programming languages
    • Any prior experience as a research assistant or with independent research (e.g., a senior thesis)
  • A CV
  • A transcript (unofficial is fine)
  • Two letters of reference

Please reach out to Gede Virananda at iv2111@stern.nyu.edu if you have any questions.
