Lab Manager - Bartlett
Under the general supervision of the laboratory PI, the Laboratory Manager is responsible for supporting and facilitating the lab’s day-to-day activities and long-term research goals. The Lab Manager is responsible for overseeing the lab’s implementation of and compliance with university research safety standards, including but not limited to chemical safety plans, biosafety regulations, and hazardous and biohazardous waste disposal. In addition to stocking, maintaining, and organizing lab facilities, the Lab Manager is expected to assist in various entomological and ecological research projects. Project specifics differ based on the lab’s current research goals, but the Lab Manager is expected to directly support lab members by coordinating their needs regarding time and resource allocation.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:
- Knowledge of principles of biology, ecology, entomology, chemistry
- Proficiency in laboratory skills
- Experience maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment
- Demonstrated organizational and data management skills
- Experience handling and rearing live specimen, especially insects
- Good communication skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Physical Demands:
- Extended periods of sitting at a desk/microscope.
- Travel to and from meetings.
- Handling of stinging insects.
- Handling of hazardous chemicals.
- Moderate lifting, loading, and transportation of boxes, equipment.
- Driving as needed to perform job duties
Duties/Responsibilities:
Laboratory Management:
- Ensure lab compliance with health and safety standards, coordinate yearly inspections, and ensure all lab members are up to date on necessary trainings
- Oversee lab chemical management and safety, including: keep an updated chemical inventory through Chematix, develop and implement annual Chemical Safety Plan, and Hazardous Waste Management
- Oversee lab compliance to Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Protocol, assist Biosafety Office with any necessary adjusts to current IBC protocol, update and maintain laboratory biosafety manual, ensure all lab members have necessary biosafety trainings, assist in biohazardous waste transport and management
- Manage lab stock and inventory of materials (including consumables, chemicals, and equipment) as well as facility organization
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and coordinate service for lab equipment
- Manage and update laboratory safety manual and Material Safety Data Sheets to ensure UGA Right To Know compliance

Scientific Research:
- Assist on various research projects by utilizing techniques such as parasitological assays, microscopy, insect identification, and basic chemistry
- Assist maintenance and acquisition of live insect populations, in both field and lab settings
Percentage of time: 30
Purchasing and Clerical Duties:
- Maintain lab stock of necessary materials through purchasing within budgetary guidelines, grant management, and budgeting
- Communicate with lab members to identify equipment and supply needs
- Complete required trainings and maintain laboratory records of all lab members’ trainings
- Additional reading, notetaking, and clerical deskwork as needed

Collaborative Group Work:
- Attend/help arrange lab meetings, emails, and check-ins
- Assist in scheduling of meetings or events/logistics
