Essential Job Duties:
The Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) and Comparative Pathology Laboratory (CPL) Veterinary Technician provides advanced veterinary anesthesia and technical support for a varied range of research and clinical cases involving small companion animals, equine and farm species, birds, and exotics. This role is essential to ensuring safe, effective anesthesia delivery and exceptional animal care throughout all phases of research and teaching activities at the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center.
Working closely with clinicians, researchers, students, and staff, the Veterinary Technician contributes to innovative research and clinical excellence by providing high-quality anesthetic management, patient monitoring, post-operative support, and technical expertise. This position also plays a key role in training and mentoring senior veterinary students, residents, and interns in anesthesia techniques and patient care. Additionally, this position involves lifting up to 60 pounds on a frequent basis, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Key Responsibilities
- Administer anesthesia and provide anesthetic support for small animals, large animals, exotics, and avian species-from induction through recovery.
- Perform technical procedures such as IV catheter placement, venipuncture, drug administration (IV, oral, subcutaneous), blood transfusions, nerve blocks, and emergency interventions.
- Monitor and record patient parameters accurately, maintaining detailed electronic and paper medical records.
- Provide post-operative care, ensure patient comfort and cleanliness, and assist with pain management and specialized treatments.
- Teach, coach, and evaluate veterinary students, externs, and interns on anesthesia protocols and clinical techniques.
- Maintain compliance with infectious disease control, radiation safety, OSHA, IACUC, USDA, AAALAC, and EHS standards.
- Manage anesthetic equipment and supplies, ensuring cleanliness, functionality, and availability for daily operations.

Minimum Experience/Education:
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
Required Qualifications:
* Knowledge of administering anesthesia.
* Experience working with small animals and comfortable working with large animals.
* Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
* Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
* Ability to provide high quality customer service.
* Ability to lift up to 60 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.
* Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
* Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
* Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
* Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
* Desire to teach 4th year veterinary students and undergrad interns.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or eligibility for registration preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in administering anesthesia across multiple species.
- Hands-on experience working with both small and large animals in a clinical or research environment.
- Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills in fast-paced, high-stakes settings.
- Experience mentoring or teaching veterinary students or technical staff.
Required license or certification:
- A valid North Carolina Drivers license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
- AALAS certification is required within 6 months of eligibility.
