Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
The Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington seeks to hire a lecturer in criminology starting August 2026.
This is a nine-month non-tenure track position that carries a teaching load of four courses per semester. The position may include the opportunity for additional summer school teaching. While some asynchronous online instruction will be expected, instructors must be available to teach on-campus courses in Wilmington.
This is a fixed-term, one-year position that is renewable, contingent upon satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding. The university provides opportunities for promotion to higher non-tenure track ranks for eligible instructors.
The successful candidate should have the potential for innovation and leadership in both teaching and service. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, directing undergraduate student research as needed, providing service to the Department of Sociology and Criminology, and keeping up with new and developing knowledge and issues in the field. We are seeking to hire an individual who complements our existing strengths, specifically our department's commitment to public and applied criminology.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Applicants must hold a Master's in criminology, criminal justice, sociology, or a closely related field at time of application.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Preference will be given to candidates with

  • Ph.D. in criminology, criminal justice, sociology, or a closely related field at time of application
  • Experience teaching online and face-to-face introductory and upper-level courses in criminology and sociology, particularly in the area of law and society
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and fostering student learning
  • Potential for innovation and leadership in both teaching and service
