Job Details

Working Title: Lecturer in Classical Studies

Appointment Type: Full Time

Purpose of Position:

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (MCLL) at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track position in Classical Studies, effective August 2026.

The department seeks candidates with a specialization in the material culture of ancient Rome, who also have a demonstrated ability to teach Latin language courses at all levels. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduates. The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities will include teaching courses within the department’s programs in Latin and Classical Studies and the university’s Liberal Learning Core. Research and teaching interests in art history, archaeology, and/or digital humanities are particularly welcome. Also desirable are an interest in conducting study abroad trips, archeological site experience, and/or skills in conservation and preservation. The Classics program is located within a department that is central to the University’s liberal arts curriculum, and it enjoys collegial cross-disciplinary interactions within the department and across the University.

The nominal teaching load for non-tenure-track appointments is 4-4. The Ph.D. in Classical Studies or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of lecturer, a position which has the potential for promotion to a multi-year contract or to the rank of senior lecturer after a given number of years of service. Candidates with a master’s degree may be considered for appointment at the rank of instructor.
